Renault Scenic 2004 Timing Belt Snapped!

Just a quick one. The other halfs car just cut out while she was driving it. Called the AA he had a look and said it was a broken timing belt.
We had the timing belt go 2.5 years ago due to a frayed auxiliary belt and it cost us €2000 to fix at the time. Reading online it seems almost certain the valves will be bent again so I suppose an engine rebuild is needed again!
Does anyone have any suggestions on this, can you get this type of work done at a lower cost?
Car is a 2004 Renault scenic 1.4 16v. Its otherwise in good condition with only 64k miles. Cheers.

Where did you get it done the last time? Main dealer or independent? Where are you located?

It was done by an independent. I'm located in Blackrock Dublin.

2k is a bit expensive IMO. A proper repair should come in closer to €1000-1200.

I'd want to find the cause of the belt breaking again though and make sure thats recified too.

I meant to mention in my original post there was a buzzing coming from the engine since last August, it was very slight but it would increase and decrease in line with the engine revs. I did run it down to the same mechanic and he had a listen and thought it was probably a loose heat shield or something. He did ask me to bring it back and they would trace the source of the noise, to be honest I never followed up on it. the noise was coming from around the area of the timing belt i think. Could be a failed water pump?

Well the water pump and all timing belt guide rollers and tensioner should have all been replaced together with the belt. They may not have changed everything, or they may not have tensioned the belt correctly.

If a timing belt is overtightened it can make a buzzing/whirring sort of noise and won't lastas long as it should....

I think its just one of those things but It needs to be taken care of. Is this something you could take on ND?
