Hi Guys, been an avid reader of the forum for quite sometime now and am more than inspired by all who contribute. I am going for a pelvic ultrasound this week after going to the doctor 2 years after being diagnosed with a 'huge' cyst on my ovary. It was spotted on an MRI scan and the doc dismissed it and told me to get my back in order first. Duely did so and 2 years down the road after mentioning it on every visit to him I finally made it my mission last week to go specifically about it. He's sending me for the ultrasound begrudgingly, i'm 31 and time is a ticking on. He of course took his opportunity to remind me how fat I am, this is the norm even when I go in to get the flu injection.

Anyway, my question is has anyone ever gone for one of these scans? I've read they can also be internal if they can't see what's needed and I'm wondering would my jelly belly hamper their view so I should prepare for a possible internal? Going private for the scan as the waiting list in the hosp is too long, would love to get cracking asap. Came off the pill and want a baby but considering I knew about the cyst(s) I thought I'd address that first so as not to be disappointed each month for something that could possibly be treated in advance.

Also, long winded I know and am sorry, Rotunda would be hosp of choice and I'm just wondering if anyone has had any 'overweight' pregnancy experiences with them? I know i'll have to have c-sections because of back/hip issues so will be going in knowing this in advance.

    Thanks guys :-)

Firstly, your doctor is an ass :D.

In my experience they usually do a transvaginal ultrasound - the first tummy one I ever got was when I was 11 weeks pregnant, the rest throughout my fertility treatment was Vag ultrasound.

They are a doddle, and doesnt matter what size you are, they should give a good view of your ovaries.

You firstly go behind the curtain and undress from the waist down. There is usually a paper towel you put over your lap, then they help you into the stirrups. (the room is nice and dim for the scan so its not like you are squirming under a flourescent light) They have a plastic wand, maybe a bit thicker and shorter than a wooden spoon handle, (nicknamed dildocam here on this forum :D) which they put either a condom or a glove over, lube it up and slide it in. Its all very gentle. My first one I was on day one of my period and normally very sensitive, but I didnt even feel it going in until she pointed out my ovary on the screen!

I think that if a doctor needs to discuss your weight as having a bearing on your fertility, they will speak to you like a mature adult and be a lot more tactful than your GP. It may be that if something like a thyroid issue was found, that can contribute towards ovarian problems and also weight gain - our Lady hormones and weight are very much related.

Certainly, I have always been treated by Gynae and Obgyn fertility specialist, they have been very very nice. Your doctor is just an abrupt ass.

Thanks for the reply Neyite, at least now I know and won't be surprised or shocked when they tell me to get em off!! I don't mind how they do it, although of course I'd prefer not to have the dildocam job done but it's for the greater good so bring it on !!

Yeah sometimes my doctor is the best in the world but there is always the sharp or cutting comment about my weight, I went for the flu injection and got the weight comment. I always tell him I'm working on it but to be honest I didn't tell him I'm going to be trying for a baby soon and that's why I want this scan done, I'm sure he knows but I didn't volunteer the information becuase sometimes ya just can't listen to another weight comment. Just back from spin class, they don't care what you're doing once you don't go to them with blubber. I'll have the warmest duvet for any baby who wants to live in there for 9 months, can't wait :-)

    2 days to dildocam :p

Just back from ultrasound, wasn't an internal one which I am delighted about but was able to see and was told I have 2 perfect ovaries, happy days :-)
