Say what you like about Michael O Leary and the cruel face of unrepentant capitalism, but it is Ryanair which is comoing to the rescue of beleagured Knock Airpot by open 4 new European routes :
"
Passengers will now be able to connect directly from Ireland West airport to Milan, Frankfort, Paris and Barcelona.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny today joined Ryanair chief Michael O’Leary to make the announcement of the new flights.

From next March more than 20 flights a week will operate to the new destinations and it means that Ryanair will fly to 14 destinations in Europe and the UK from Knock."
http://www.independent.ie/business/irish/new-ryanair-routes-link-knock-to-milan-frankfort-paris-and-barcelona-2940774.html

This is how ireland will extract itself from recesssion, by reyling on private enterprise and dynamism.
Will Board.ie posters join me in calling a round of applausue for Ryanair ? :)
Ni bheidh a leithid ann aris !
( Pardon any grammar/spelling msitakes in irish phrase !)

I wonder if this is being advertised in those countries as Dublin West?

No, at least not in the same way as Ireland is now apparently being represented as ' John Bulls Other Island' ;)

I'll go one better and pardon your mistakes in English :D

On a more serious note, of course only private enterprise and dynamism will drag Ireland up but only if govt leaves it alone and lets it get on with it.

As for Enda Kenny wasting his time with this sort of minor (but obviously Mayo related!!) business, well, doesn't our Taoiseach have more important things to be working on?!

He is doing important business in his opinion, trying to get the other 3 FG candidates in Mayo re elected next time out. Its more important than running the country for them.

I wonder if Mario Monti, Angela Merkel, Nicolas Sarkozy and Zapatero/Rajoy are also holding simultaneous press conferences proclaiming this great news.

I wonder is there any government dodgy agreements involved like tax breaks or whatever so Enda can bring this to the people of the West! That isn't a knock at Ryanair but I struggle to see how these routes will be profitable other than so Enda can use Ryanair to get to Germany or France and sneak in under the radar to have a quiet meeting about our budgets :P

Fair

No we are not!! We are now Bavaria West now !!!!

Ryanair obviously feel there is a market for Knock both from people here and tourists to visit. Its a good sign and a cause to feel optimistic about our future which is a welcome change from the doom and gloom that occupies nearly every media form in this country at the moment.

I dunno. These are risky routes dependent somewhat on a niche religious market. Might mean those routes will be more advertised in those countries with the leader of the country present for the photoshoot. Tourists important business for a country like us

Why should we applaud Ryanair? They're doing this to make money (as is their right), not for the well being of the West. The destinations they name, the passengers will be mostly going in one direction... and not the way that benefits the north West.

I'll keep the champagne on ice, if you don't mind.

This thread shows how right-wing the agenda of Ryanair and its supporters is.

The fact is that Ryanair is anti-union. Trade union members should boycott Ryanair until it is prepared to recognise collective bargaining rights.

Oh give me a break.

Ryanair is a huge success, over the past decade or more it has changed the air travel landscape throughout Europe.

It is an Irish company and pays it's taxes to the Irish exchequer.

I seriously doubt that a union burdened airline would be able to be a flexible as Ryanair and thus would not have the level of success Ryanair has had.

Yeah, I'm sure that's top of the agenda for the staff of Knock Airport.

Should it not be a round of applause for Knock Airport? They are the ones attracting not just Ryanair but also Lufthansa, BMI, Aer Lingus and others... In the past they had the transatlantic route too.

It's a pity the DAA haven't got their act together and done deals for Shannon. It's got the motorway between it and Galway and could serve Limerick/Kerry/Tipp too.

They don't because it is so cheap. I know union activists who fly Ryanair when they are paying for their own flights.

Yeah those smart ballsy guys like Mick Wallace and Sean Quinn will save the country.

Knock airport is subsidised by the state and should be closed.
Shannon airport is subsidised by the state and should be closed.

If Knock can make it on its own fine. But I do not want to pay one penny towards it.

The destinations list is interesting.
No recession in Mayo.

I wonder how much subsidies Ryan Air will receive.
