    Hey guys,

This is a question that I have been pondering about recently. For the last 5 years I've suffered really badly from what has finally been diagnosed as stress induced IBS. For such a long time I just didn't know what was wrong with me. I went to about 10 different doctors and specialists with very little progress.

This year, things came to a head. Basically, my digestive system completely crashed. I was sick for about 2 months. Trying to work was a nightmare. I lost a lot of weight. Doctors couldn't pin point it. There were theories that I had Crohn's, hormone imbalance, etc. It really wasn't a great time. In the middle of all this, I was in a health shop asking about supplements to help my condition. The worker gave me the name of a kinesiologist who they highly recommended.

Seen as how I was getting nowhere with medical science, I decided to give it a go. To cut a long story short, it was a fantastic help. The kinesiologist was able to tell me there and then what was wrong with me and the foods I needed to avoid. About a month later I had scopes performed with a really good gastroenterologist who diagnosed the IBS. He sent me to a dietician who placed me on a special diet.....but interestingly enough, my kinesiologist had told me the exact same foods all those weeks prior!

So since I need to learn to combat stress, my kinesiologist has advised me to take up Reiki so i can perform it on myself if needs be. Has anyone ever tried Reiki? There seems to be arguments for and against. There also seems to be a lot of debate about reiki interfering with the paranormal. But has anyone benefited from the process? I've looked at some courses on various websites. If you have to pay for a course, I'd like to think I'm picking the right one. Of course it's alternative, but I'd never rule out alternative practice. So far it has helped me far more than medical science. So if anyone has any info, it'd me much appreciated.

Reiki can't do anything other than placebo.

Hi there, can't really help much with your question about reiki, but I know two people, both who horrendously suffered with IBS who got great relief through hypnotherapy and yoga (hatha, the breathy stretchy type). I think there is a thread here on boards about IBS and it is mentioned there also. Another one I can personally recommend is meditation. I did a course in the temple bar meditation centre and found it brilliant.

If your Irritable bowel is related to stress and tends to fare up when your stressed or tense, then reiki will help ease stress .

It helped me alot to relieve stress.

Have you tried a fast and detox? I did this course in Thailand which cured digestive problems I'd had for years:

Yet if placebo works to reduce her stress Reiki might be very effective

Sure, but if it's stress I'd recommend Mindfulness or another meditation technique which has some actual science backing up its effectiveness.

Why not just take a sugar pill then, cheaper and far more convenient.

Saline injections are better. Two injections is better again. Etc.

    I love how placebo works!

    :D

I obviously don't know how it works, I just like how a bigger, badder placebo is more effective than a smaller one and similar.

Reiki is just faith healing in another guise, there's no evidence that it works at all.
Hatha yoga, as someone already mentioned, might very well offer some relief. Best of luck.

Yeah Yoga has some evidence behind it too if I remember correctly. Really, why bother with the likes of Reiki when there are Eastern approaches that actually have some backup!

    Hi,

Would just like to clear some stuff up in regards to reiki.:) The most important part of doing reiki on yourself it taking the time out for yourself with an intention of reducing stress and symptoms. I agree with the post that says it is very much like faith healing, it does have a similar outcome just a different way of performing the healing. I have never heard of Reiki curing any illness, however, I have heard of how uplifted people feel after treatment, if it reduces symptoms and encourages well being then it can't be a bad thing. :D

For what its worth I was the biggest skeptic in the world about any so called holistic mumbo jumbo up until a year ago when I had severe cramps from stress so took up an offer from a friend who is trained in Reiki for the hell of it. It involved the placing of hands on the back of my skull for 50 minutes in silence during which time I felt an extraordinary amount of heat from her hands and felt submerged in a relaxed state. Afterwards I felt extremely weak and tired and emotional and I had a metallic taste on the roof of my mouth, detoxing of some sort. Her explanation was that there has probably been a shift / improvement in my energy flow bringing it closer to how it should be and is when we are children and that I should take it very easy as the particular flow of energy has been unchallenged for many years so will take adjusting to get used to. I can honestly say that I instinctively felt what she was saying was true, on a cellular level it made perfect sense.
I have nothing to gain from ghlossing up the experience and I would be perfectly happy to report opposite findings.

Anyway, after two days of feeling extremely wonky I woke up with the feeling that a building had been lifted off my back. It was a life changing moment and since then my physical health has dramatically improved and emotionally I'm much more grounded. Negativity has receded completely. My cramps completely went away and since then I have become fascinated with the practice and am now much more familiar with the idea that body and mind are totally intertwined.
I also now realize that the idea of energy flow which is similar to blood flow but just outside detection by current science which acts as a kind of electro magnetic envelope or container for all our emotional and physical information goes back centuries in china with practices like Qi gong and Tai Chi. It is a stunning and mysterious healing art which deserves more than to be dismissed casually as a placebo.

Here is a good documentary on energy work...
