Hi- this is a bit random but my husband loves old planes, particularly big old military planes that would have transported vehicles etc He used to travel in them when he lived in Africa years ago working for an NGO and has mad pictures from the inside of one of them doing a food drop. . (is a hercules one of them?) Anyway, he's impossible to buy a gift for, he's had a flying lesson already as a gift from me. However I know that it didn't really do it for him, a tour of Baldonnell and the planes there would b my ideal !! (I can hear the virtual sniggers ;)

Anyone have any ideas about what is available in ireland that might be interesting for him.?

You can get a tour of Baldonnel organised for him and it's free... I'll send you the contact details by PM...

There's very little in Ireland, however if you're willing to travel to England there's this. http://www.classicflight.com/experiences
Taxying in a DC6 might be just up his street. Or flying in a vintage aircraft. How about flying alongside a Spitfire in a helicopter?

There is a big choice in Britain.

Here apart from flying lessons, there would only be parachuting which isn't for everyone.

But if the aircraft doesn't have to be real. A 'flight' in a simulator might be just the thing. Simtech in Dublin, Atlantic Air Ventures in Shannon and Eirsim in Galway all offer vouchers.

The only one I have experience of is the Simtech version which was quite compelling even if it doesn't move.

I know that years ago there was a DC6 at Waterford Airport that also doubled as a museum , is it still there or was it turned into beer cans ?

It's up in Dromod, County Leitrim last I heard.

    Hi there
That DC-6 is long gone. It became too corroded to save and was scrapped. The mortal remains of the collection are now in Dromod. If he wants to look at old freighters, go to Shannon. Anyone wanting a tour to Baldonnel simply has to write to the "Office of the Station Commander" (ring first and ask for his name) and ask to be given a tour. That's the official procedure and the one most likely to get a positive answer. I gave enough tours there in my time to know that that's how it works.

    regards
