Considering buying my OH a tablet for Xmas.
Does the Galaxy Tab stand up at all to an iPad?
I have an ipad 1 myself but have no experience of the Galaxy tab.

    Any opinions?

I'd get your OH an iPad 2 to be perfectly honest.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is very similar hardware-wise to the ipad2, and in some ways more powerful.

Android 3.1/2 (Honeycomb) is not quite as polished as iOS5, but will be upgraded to Android 4.0 (Ice-Cream Sandwich) which is getting excellent reviews.

It comes down to this imo: both will browse the web fine, both will play videos and music fine.
The ipad has more apps and better apps, though android is catching up.
The galaxy tab is more customisable with widgets, themes, wallpapers etc. It's far more versatile.

You can't go wrong with either. If OH is not technically minded, I'd get the ipad. But beware that you're unlikely to get unbiased views in the Apple Media Devices forum

Have used a few Android tablets now as I really do want to dislike Apple but none come near the iPad in my opinion. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is probably the best Android tablet out there mind you.

    You can IMO.

I tried the Samsung for a few days and wanted to throw it against the wall. In terms of user experience it was inferior in every way. Crap browser, inaccurate touch, app store is a joke in terms of usability and quality of apps.

Then you must have had a dodgy model. I've used the galaxy and the browser was smooth and the touch experience was just as good as the ipad. Every video review/comparison of the ipad and galaxy tab i've seen confirms my view that the user experience is similar on both for everyday tasks like browsing/media

The criticism of the apps is valid, but the new OS should help correct things as all android apps should be developed for phone and tablet.

The problem with Android is that you can never be sure your device will get the updated software when its released. Google seem to play favourites with different manufacturers depending on their mood.

I'm typing this on a Xoom which is similar software wise to the Galaxy. I have a few mates with Ipads. I've converted one of them from an Ipad to a Xoom. He's happy with it so it obviously compares.

It depends what you want to do I suppose. List what you want to get from a tablet. Also you might want to post the same question in the Android forum. You will get a load of people there saying the Galaxy is better. But then in this forum you'll get a load of people saying the Ipad is better. Ask the question in both and weigh up the responses.

I'm biased of course but I find the web browsing better on my tablet than Ive use on the Ipad and I have loads of apps. I'm not sure what you can do on the Ipad that you can't do on a Honeycomb tablet.

Sold my iPad 1 to get a 10.1, kept it a month and bought an ipad2, android just isn't there on tablets yet

i think the worst thing about android tablets is that developers have been insanely slow to support their apps on them.

sure there are tablet optimised apps for android but they are merely a drop in the ocean compared to what is on the apple app store.

apple got the transition from phone to tablet right, apps looks okish if the developer done nothing to them, the developer spends an hour and they look pretty amazing on the ipad.

Here's a handy site that just categorises apps designed for Android tablets.

why wouldnt you get her an ipad? android tablets are especially of interest to people more technically minded who resent apples lock down approach, is this the case with your OH or does she just want something that works?

    That's my thinking too.

I always have to help out my wife with her laptop but she whizzes around our iPad.

Anyone know if it possible to connect and access data from an external USB HDD (eg Wd Passport drive) from a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1? I understand it has an onboard USB port, however not sure if this is just for connection to a PC. If this cant be used to connect the external drive is there an accessory available that will enable connection (if so which)?
    Thanks

    Get the ipad OP,

Android phones have caught up to iphone IMHO but tablets definitely have not, and the price differential that exists with the iphone does not with the ipad. In terms of build quality, smoothness of the UI, quality of materials used, and apps, the ipad is still way ahead, i think, coming from an Android phone user..

Considering the android code is released publically, can't see how this would be the case..
