Three Days On, One Day Off

    Hi.

I started running two weeks ago, having been brisk-walking three times a week for the previous two months. I'm enjoying the change of pace, but I'm just wondering would three days on, one day off be too much too soon?

I'm running about 3.5 miles each night (don't laugh), which I can do with reasonable comfort, and I'm keen on running it more often than I was walking it. I don't feel like I'd be doing myself any harm, but then again I'm new to exercise and not sure how to progress. I guess there's no right answer, each person is different, but generally speaking, is six days per week overkill?

My apologies for what is probably a silly question.

    Thanks.

I think that's a great start and if you can maintain that for a month or so (as long as you're being honest with yourself and it's not making you too tired or sore) you'll be in great nick for 2012 and in the meantime why not get reading on the subject and come up with some goals for the new year. Best of luck with it.

I think 6 days a week will have you knackered soon enough, and you'd be better off starting with 3/4 days a week, and adding 5th and 6th days very gradually. The days off give your legs a chance to recover and adapt to the exercise.
(Eventually you'll get to the point where an easy run has the same recovery benefit)

I didn't read it as 6 days a week I read it as 3 days on 1 day off, so over a 4 week period it would be 7 rest days compared with 4.
Raycun does make a good point though, maybe because you're new to it 2 days on 1 day off and your goal for the new year could be 3 days on 1 day off

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll do two consecutive days so, and aim for three days in the new year. I'm not tired or in pain the day after. On the contrary, I had some tension in my lower back which seems to have benefited from it. But I'll take your advice and ease myself into it. It's just bloody addictive. I can't drive so it's as close as I've ever got to being out on the open road. :)

    Thanks again.
