What modules are you delivering? I co-ordinate a FETAC Level 5 Childcare course and deliver Work Experience and Communications.

    Hi,
The modules are child development, caring for children, working in childcare and early childhood education.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

FETAC Level 5 is very practical. Link what you are teaching to the workplace.

Go to the Gill and Macmillan website and take a look at the Child Development book - its excellent. All of the Gill and Macmillan Further Education books are tailored to the FETAC courses.

Read through the SLOs (Specific Learning Objectives) ; look at the marking scheme and your knowledge of the subject should enable you to structure a course. First time it is a lot of work but once you have it done it is just a matter of making adjustments as you see where you need to place more emphasis or less. One of the joys of teaching FETAC is that you have input into what you are going to teach.

Be aware that after this year it will all change and you will probably find yourself with much less control over how you structure the course.

Having said all that the course leader really should have some samples of how it has been done previously, and at least have some input into what they want you to teach.

    Hey guys

I am about to start teaching FETAC and I have been trying to design the lessons based on the SLO's which seems Ok, but I am really unsure of the assignments. One is a project and the other is a case study. The new descriptor says I must cover all the objectives in the two assignments but that seems a little unrealistic as some are quite broad. I am also not 100% on what they want the students to do for the project as it seems very similar to the case study. Could I get them to do a presentation or something?

Any help would be really appreciated.

    Thank you.

My understanding of the situation with the new modules is that the course has to be approved by FETAC. Some providers will create their own courses and have them approved, they will then also be available to other providers. In the same way you can use another provider's course. Since the courses are only now being written its a bit difficult to know when material will be available to you. It all looks a bit haphazard to me but maybe I am not understanding it fully, I am not involved in writing courses as I am about to retire.

How you deal with it will depend to some extent on the type of provider you are with and how they are organising courses. I may have this wrong, but I don't think you can go 'freelance', whatever course you develop will have to be approved by Fetac.

In more direct answer to your question, without knowing what subject you are teaching its hard to give a helpful reply. There used be a section in the module descriptor which told you what formats you can use, I don't know if it is in the new ones.

Sorry to interrupt your discussion everyone. Can you tell me what qualifications you needed to to tutor in childcare please? Is a degree in childcare essential or is FETAC 6 and a diploma in adult education acceptable ? Asking for a friend, thanks .

Well, I can only speak for courses delivered in VEC schools and all of the tutors in our centre are qualified secondary teachers.

Are you sure you have got that right? A case study means that you research/watch one or more (children) and keep a record of everything that happens. Researching the nutritional requirements for a 5 year old would be a different project.

Have you been asked to do a case study on the eating habits of a 5 year old, with a view to creating a menu? As to evaluating the menu, do you mean you have to evaluate how the child responds to the menu? Because you would be evaluating as you created the menu - ie saying why you were selecting various foods.

Were you in class when this project was given, because it should have been explained, and you should have had some classes on nutrition, so that you have a basis for doing your research. If you have attended all classes and got all notes and handouts, and it is not mentioned, then you need to ask for some further explanation.

Yes my assignment says 'provide details of the individuals dietary needs in the form of a case study' so im not to certain as to how to go about it?
Plan a set of menu's for a week for the individual based on the criteria for nutrition.
Outline why you choose the foods for your menu and make recommendations.
Indicate how the menu fulfills the individuals requirements.
That's just part of what i have to do. No I evaluate the foods I picked and why i picked them.
Yes I was in class but It wasn't explained just handed out to us and a date given when to hand it up.

Not really sure what kind of advice you need...

Is there a clear marking scheme on the brief? If so, just make sure you follow it carefully and make it clear where each mark was awarded. If not, make sure you show your marking clearly - the students will ask, and can be very demanding if you can't explain why you gave or took away a mark.
