Heating water from oil heating system

    Hi Guys,

We have Oil heating in the house, and have 3 zones,

1 zone heats the downstairs of the house.

The other zone for Upstairs and the last seems to be heating the water.

My parents have gas heating and when they have the heating on it heats the water at the same time.

I am wondering would there be much work involved in changing the timers is this what would need to be done so that we can have hot water when the rads are on.

it is not much of a big deal just means I need to time also for the water to come on but am wondering is this an added cost are we using more oil because of this?

I hope I am making sense.

    Thanks in advance

Darragho, if it`s a zoned system its just a question of varying the times on the programmer to suit your needs. Yes you will use more oil to heat both rather than one buts it`s well worth turning your stats down by a degree.

I may be missing something here but if you have 3 zone valves the water is heated independently of the radiators. When the DHW requires heat it will turn on that circuit only and just heat the hot water. When it is hot enough then it will turn off. Why would you want the radiators on as well? If it is not a cold day then you just want to heat DHW don't you? If you have two room stats for the room heating and one on the DHW tank for the hot water.
That is the best and cheapest option. If you have programmable room stats that is even better.
Hope I have understood that correctly.
