Why are there not more unusual / kit car / replicas in Ireland?

Are these ridiculously dear to insure or does the government simply not want them around?

I have only seen one Caterham 7 in Ireland and he was on a Norn Iron redge. If you built a kit car in Ireland would you have fierce trouble trying to get it registered?

Ever since the Green party got in a few years ago anything done by DIY enthousiast seems to be automatically deemed inferior because it wasn't done by a qualified mechanic so I always feel there is a move to banish anything that isn't mass produced, NCAP tested & type approved off the roads, but to what extent is this true?

Well, afaik, you have to pay VRT to register it, for a.start....I know someone with a 7, and he says it's very, very uncomfortable on anything other than a mirror-smoothly surface....
Insurance is another issue- you can get it, but it is more expensive....
It's just that, on average, its too much hassle.....

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I know of 2 Caterhams in Cork, a Midas Kit Car, I've a GTM Rossa, I know a Westfield, and there's a few (crappy) MR2 Ferrari conversions around here too.
