I bought a brand new laptop as a present and I was wondering of I can take it through hand luggage without having to take it out of the box etc or do I h e to put it in the under carriage.

Sorry mods if it's the wrong place

You can take it on as hand luggage but they normally ask people to take them out of the bags when they're being scanned, in my experience at least.

Either way, you'll be asked to separate the laptop itself from everything else, to be scanned at security. So, easier to have it out of the box already.

I took a Macbook through Minneapolis & JFK. Explained to TSA staff it was a pressie, boxed and sealed. No problems.

Bear in mind that if you are bringing it from outside the EU, you may get hit for the tax and duty. More obvious if it's in original packing.

I came through JFK 2 weeks ago with an iPad sealed in it's box. I asked the security guy about it & he said it was fine in the box as it was & just to put it in a separate tray - no problems! :)
