Can Irish VRT only be paid on a car once?

    Question;

    If you take an Irish registered car, and ask for copy evidence of the original VRT payment. Then you de-register the car in Ireland, and register it in the UK to a UK address that you have. You pay your UK road tax and have valid insurance/MOT.

    If you are driving the car again in the Republic from time to time, can the customs officers really do anything about it - if you are able to show them proof that VRT was paid in Ireland on that chassis number already? I've read the revenue VRT manual and can't find any references to the matter.

    Thanks

    VRT is only payable once buy if your an irish resident you cant drive a foreign registered car here.

    If your a proper UK resident (not just a "have access to a uk address but spend all your time in Ireland" uk resident) then your ok to drive it here.

    I'd say if it's on UK plates, then all limitations concerning foreign registered car applies.

    Rules are about driving foreign registered car, and fact that VRT was already paid for it doesn't change a thing.
    Obviously if you want to register it again in Ireland, you won't need to pay VRT. But you will most likely have to get Irish insurance, tax and NCT.

    On the other hand, if car is being brought to Ireland by UK resident, it's perfectly legal for him to drive in Ireland on UK plates.

    It is a total pain in the arse trying to convince customs that you are indeed not resident if you are an Irish citizen living abroad.

    Would they expect you to carry some proof of residency abroad with you all the time, and otherwise seize the car?

    Yes, even then it is an uphill struggle.
