Connecting flight - 2 different airlines

Im looking at flights to Istanbul.

British Airways offer a service from Dublin with a connection at LHR. The DUB-LHR is a codeshare operated by Aer Lingus, and the LHR-IST is operated by British Airways themselves.

The issue I have at the minute is with luggage. I need to bring one check in bag with me. From my interpretation British Airways allow one checked in bag whereas Aer Lingus you have to pay. I dont mind paying but there is no option on the flight booking to say you have a bag.

Can I just turn up at the airport and pay the €20 there or how do I go about doing it in advance? I think with codeshares that the airlines should agree things such as this!

If you've booked it all with BA, no bag fee on the Aer Lingus leg :)

Have you considered the Turkish Airlines flight from Dublin to Istanbul?

+1 on this, flew with Turkish Airlines direct from Dublin to Istanbul in April. I had a much more pleasant experience flying with these than I've had with Aer Lingus / BA in the last 5 years.

Is it worth the extra €100 though?

Thanks for the replies regarding the luggage though.

Depends on the value you place on a shorter trip, no changing of terminals, less chances of misonnection etc..

Turkish aren't bad to fly with, however.

seems like a no brainer to me - factor in your own time and costs and this might make sense

Somthing to bear in mind alright I guess, although the BA flight gets you to Istanbul earlier too, but could be less tired if going with THY.

Just one more question regarding Turkey

I saw somewhere that you require a visa. Can this be got on point of entry or do you have to apply for it in advance? Is there a a turkish embassy in dublin or how do you go about applying for one.

Added to that, you require a return ticket to be allowed in, however my plan is to get a train from Istanbul to Bulgaria, if I prebooked a train ticket would that work or would it have to be a return flight?

    Thanks.
