Cartier Ladies

Hey folks - question from a newbie to this forum. The good wife has wanted a Cartier watch for awhile now and I think Santa might just be able to sort it out this yr for her. Was in BTs earlier and looks like her favourite is the Tank Solo - model no is W5200013.

So what I'm looking to ye for is your respected opinions... are cartier watches worth their price tag? will the watch hold its value or are there comparable pieces from better manufacturers? are there other brands/makes similar to this style that I should be getting her to take a peek at?

and finally should one buy from a bricks and mortar in Dublin for any reason (other than price)?

I'll leave others to debate the merits of the Cartier brand, but my wife wears a Santos automatic and she loves it. They don't hold value very well at all, especially the ladies models. But if it's bought as a gift, and she's always wanted one, then chances are she'll keep it for a long time, so value retention would be of less importance.
There are a few shops in Dublin that I know of that sell used Cartier, which would be a good way of minimising depreciation. Dawson Jewellers on Dawson St and Corr's Jewellers in Powerscourt are two. You should save a nice amount on the BTs price, and you'll have the security of a warranty.
Good luck with the search, and be sure to drop plenty of hints for a Breitling for yourself :D

Its a very stylish classic look.

You are going to pay a premium when buying in store in Dublin or anywhere else in Ireland. If you can find it for a good price online print out the product page and bring it to a store in Dublin and see if they will match the price. You might get a good deal that way.

My wife tried on the santos automatic - and at one stage was leaning towards it but the tank solo seemed to be the closer on the first afternoons viewing.

Like you've said - this is a gift, that she has waited many years to receive, and we would both hope will be kept for a very long time. I've never really understood how a watch that has been worn day in/day out could hold its value well. I guess a key for me is that they are worth their price tag - i.e. build quality and lifespan matches the price, and that their RRP as a new purchase isn't gonna deteriorate significantly for any particular reason.

Cool - will check them out.

The danger of researching watches is that I could catch this bug :p I have a Tag Heur Link Automatic WJF2111 which is about 7 yrs old now - gifted to me by my good wife. I could see it getting traded in for a Breitling.

I was quite surprised that the price in BTs bang on €2k whereas online it seemed as/more expensive. I was expecting to have to pay a premium to purchase there but for this particular model it doesn't seem to be the case.

My wife has two cartier, a gold tank francaise and a must de cartier 21, she loves them both :)

im not sure how well they hold their value but in her case neither will be sold, and because of the classic timless design, they age very well imo

good luck, she will be delighted

also the one listed seems like good value as they go, its looks very similar to the tank francaise in stainless steel (which my mum has) but appears more reasonably priced (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cartier-Womens-W51008Q3-Francaise-Stainless/dp/B000FLV8H8/ref=sr_1_6?s=watch&ie=UTF8&qid=1321781526&sr=1-6)

my wife has the big date pasha, she loves it.
really I found it hard to beat in terms of value /jewellery/style/ class.
    I would highly recommend them.
if you are planning a trip anywhere that has VAT free might be worth thinking of buying then, they are in all the major airports and that way you get a saving plus the experience(which is super nice with Cartier) and the gaurentee.
best of luck with the purchase

For around 2000, it's a good buy. The fact is, its a classic style - she'll keep it forever and it'll never look outdated. If you have a daughter, or a son who gets married, it can be passed on. It's really not that expensive in the long run, and they always hold a minimum value. Granted, for women's watches the minimum value would probably be 500-700 regardless of age, just off the top of my head. Make double-check (assuming you'll be buying it behind her back) that your wife is sure that she really wants the watch and hasn't changed her preference to a Santos or a Rolex Date-just, because then it's absolutely pointless buying it.

after a bit more viewing her eye is leaning now towards the stainless steel santos W20056D6.

its a good bit more expensive than the tank at €3,350 so I may need to look at the VAT free option or the bank manager will be after me ;)

and for yourself Weldons have a couple of s\h Breitlings that failed to sell at last week's auction in ora round 2k. Adams had a couple of expensive Aston Martin Beitling's at auction last week, might be worth checking there too, but they were going for 5-6k....
