You could also try Linux Mint LXDE. I have a 6.5 year old Inspiron 6000 with 512mb ram which could barely load Windows XP anymore, but runs quite happily on this.

My 512 MB 1GHz p3 runs XP just fine, for general surfing and torrents and playing movies and F@H. You might also check out http://haiku-os.org/

I know, I was just comparing my machine to sunbeam's one struggling with 512MB.

Haiku is free, last release was in June 2011.

Ubuntu is probably the easiest to install and configure, so I'd go with that.

Xubuntu as Pog suggested is allot more lightweight than Gnome Ubuntu, that new Unity enviornment is even further resource intensive.

Mint LXDE will be easier to get up and running than ubuntu.

it's ubuntu based, but with a lot of the fresh build essential installs type stuff done for you, like media codecs, flash, java and whathaveyou and for most people who just want a simple computer to use, it's got everything already installed.

it also has a slightly more similar interface to windows than regular ubuntu, so it will be easier for them to get to grips with if they are more used to a windows OS.

Ubuntu will struggle with 512. I have it running on a laptop with 1G and that's just about perfect. For 512MB I would go with Lubuntu myself.

edit: or mint lxde as suggested (which is going to be very similar)
