would it not be better to do this sort of stuff for a few days at a time?

Probably would but I can see the merit in doing say a few half days first and then a week-end.

Personally I don't mind, just looking for info and recommendations.

very useful knowledge and skills that would be useful to most people in everyday life anyway not just in survival situations. imo everyone should know how to light a fire, purify water and keep them selves sheltered and safe.

    Hi All

Just wondering if you know or could recommend any courses suitable for second level students e.g. TY?

    I've seen these:

    http://www.bushcraftireland.com/

    http://www.mactirebushcraft.com/courses.html

    http://www.ipna.ie/index.html

    http://www.adventurewicklow.com/outdooractivities/survival_weekends.htm

I've no experience in bushcraft but I think it would be great for TY students.

Or if you know if there are courses that are offered over a period of weeks e.g. half a day once a week for 3/4 weeks etc?

    Thanks in anticipation.

Buy the book SAS survival guide, its got plenty of good survival info,or join the army:D

No offence, but it was a joke.
Anyway i would really recommend the SAS survival guide.
Its one of the better books i have read when it comes to survival.
Its got illustrated pics of all the essensials you need in a survival situation.
I have other books to,but they are unfortunately in Norwegian, wont be much help to you;)

I didn't see basic water filtration in there the last time I skimmed it, and you're as like to lose an ear as not if you try his spear casting method, but its a good all rounder. Knots and shelter he does fairly well.

    well true,lol.
But its a good start for someone who wants to learn the essentials, like i said i have norwegian books as well that are better, and better knowledge as well, but the best thing to do is hit the wilderness and try it out yourself;)

There is an offer in todays "Boards Deals" for a survival course in the wicklow mountains for 35 quid. Might be the kind of thing you are looking for. The only thing that might stop is that many of your TY students would be too young.

You could also consider a days school in the grounds where the kids learn the basics of fire-making or another, single aspect of survival skills.

How will your schools insurance cover you for giving the kids knives, etc.?

    Thanks for the replies lads.

Not sure about insurance and knives, I'll check it out.

The €35 deal looks the business tho, thanks for the update.
