    Would I be mad?

I have a long list of cars I need to get through, a 190 is in there.

There's a nice looking one on carzone. 1993

Can't find 0-60 figures on them, anyone able to tell me more?

My motoring needs aren't complicated, I'm now doing 40 km a day, all motorway.

Are they easily maintained, and am i likely to lose my shirt on it?

YOu could well lose your shirt on that one, to be honest its a candidate for being preserved rather than being a daily driver. They are very easy to maintain though barring auto trouble of course. You'll get a not as nice non le 190 for lots cheaper if you wait for one to come along.

I'd be more inclined to go with a W124 pre-face lift, the baby benz is ok but alike most of the C Classes that followed i really do think they left bits off the styling to make damn sure they let everybody know it was the baby.

W124 doesn't do it for me, reminds me of c j haughey for some reason

I stand to be corrected but I don't think that is an LE, they came in 3 colours, a silver, a red and a purple. That would be close to the purple but it isn't that exact colour.

As I said, stand to be corrected but I don't think it's a genuine LE.

It's the right colour and the right interior, with 4x EW and sunroof. Different wheels though.

    I love those 190's

Not sure about the auto box if they were troublesome or not.
    Looks like a clean one..

My only attempt at bangernomics was with a 190e, back in the UK in 2002. Cost me £700 and I got 3 months out of it. The fueling system was a mix of injectors and carb and when that went, it would have cost more to fix than the car was worth. Might not be the same on all engine variants.

Mine had no radio (except the shower radio I kept in the centre console), non of the electric windows worked properly (driver's one kept coming off the rail) and I was too scared to try the electric sunroof incase it stopped working while it was open (in Manchester in the middle of winter).

Mine was an 86 manual 2.0.

I like 190E's. Well built, solid but comfy, and with really firm seats.

You could do much worse Colm, although a bigger engine might be a much better drive. I'd love a 2.3 or 2.5 16v :D

Looks like a tidy example, overpriced of course but none the less well worth checking out, the autobox is pretty much bombproof, the 1.8 engine is perfectly capable unless you are a speed king.

If you are going to have a look, run the ventilation system and check that both sides are blowing warm and the separate heater controls work, make sure all the windows work, the sunroof, that the serpentine belt is tensioned correctly and quiet in operation, check the panel inside the boot that is below the rear window for signs of corrosion. Starting - crisp when cold and warm. Look for signs of leakage from the heater matrix - lift the carpet in the footwells and have a look for blue/green damp.

the 1.8 auto is the slowest of the 190s as far as i know so if testdriving it make sure overtaking and going up hills is ok

    hi colm_mcm

The 190 is a fine predecessor to the w124 but I think that the w124 offers more space and comfort than the 190 ,having driven both . The 190 steering wheel is set too low I feel for tall people ( i'am 6-2" and I had to slink my legs under it whereas there is no such restriction on the w124. While the body is slightly heavier the w124 in the right colour/spec its still a stunning car for its age and offers near bullet proof reliability and relatively cheap motoring if you are only doing 40km per day. Ah CJ has a lot to answer for putting people of nice cars :-D

Having said that a 2.5 Cosworth 190 would surely temp me :D:D:D:D.

let us know what you decide on

The good news is that the late spec models had a smaller diameter steering wheel and the autobox means left leg clearance won't be an issue.

There was a lovely 190e 2.0 sold on donedeal last week in wexford. It had electric heated leather and the spec continued along those lines and it appeared to be in good condition. I was so tempted I rang up about it, but it was sold. It had 108k miles and 750 was the asking.

I am currently doing a bit of work on my 1990 190e to replace my defunct Focus.

I'm sure you're aware that this is being sold by a dealer, even though the Carzone ad states its a private sale:

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/vintagecars/2601568

    also has this:
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/vintagecars/2558457

    and this:
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/vintagecars/2734409

    and several others.

I've been there to look at 2 cars over the last 2 years, second time was more out of curiosity than anything else, I didn't buy either!!!!!

I wouldn't consider the LE version in any way "rare" as the ad states, they were the last of the 190's sold and were a "limited edition" model that had lots of options included in the list price. The wheels are not original, not sure if they're even MB but they don't belong on the car.

I've owned several 190's and W124's and can highly recommend both but you'll buy better and cheap than the one you linked to.
