Yep, public roads. It great but the carparks have been full after 10am every Thur, Fri and Sat for the last 2 weeks.

When oh when are Waterford City Council going to realise that they are shooting themselves in the foot. They say they need the money from on street parking yet the town is full of empty shops because the shoppers won't come in. An empty shop does not pay rates so its a net loss for the Corpo.

The shopping centres at Ardkeen and Lisduggan are full because the parking is always free. There are people who live in the vicinity of the City who haven't been into the centre city to shop for a year or more because of this. Times are desperate so we need more radical thinking to get the City centre back to life. It will continue to go backwards until they try to do something to help.

This Christmas parking notion is a start and maybe its time to continue the idea throughout the year. Recently someone I know thought they would open a shop on a trial basis and the landlord agreed with a good low cost profit sharing rental scheme. However what about the rates. Yes, you've guessed it no such thinking from the Corpo - just pay up or be sued.

They are as bad as the Minister for Finance rising VAT on goods before Christmas.

I thought the VAT increase wouldn't come into force until January 1st.

    .

WCC do make money from car parking - this is ploughed back into their spending budget on the city - the parking after 4pm was decided upon by retailers - few year ago it was early morning till 11am - but staff from shops took all the spaces leaving none for shoppers -
its a start - not ideal - but a move in the right direction in this economy!

and as far as Rates - this is decided by Government - City council only collect it - they have no authority to change them!

I think you will find that the local authorities set the rate every year and this it also within their gift to vary the scheme (i.e. incentives) should they wish to.

Who goes into town at 4pm on a Saturday expecting to get a parking space? It's a ridiculous notion.

Saw a sign that clock tower car park is going to be €1 p.h car park for december and january

Decent rate in fairness, its a private enterprise so dont think anything to do with council.

I don't expect there to be empty carparks and then a sudden influx @ 4:00pm when the cheap parking kicks in!
All quay carparks are packed from early morning and the queues tail out onto the quay, causing massive traffic headaches.

Anybody know if City Centre are doing anything simliar with their crazeballs parking rates?

Right well, it does make sence why the 'park free til 11am or 12 pm they did a few years ago didnt work, I suppose workers would take up the spaces.

The Qpark on the quay doing €1 per hour looks like a better option.

True but the Free parking after 4 on a Friday should pull in a few.

Fair play to them, pity the city council don't follow suit.

It's 1euro an hour in Kilkenny and Carlow. There's nothing in our city centre that has an advantage over those towns as there's shops closed down all over the city centre(rent is a joke!), why the hell is our parking so dear?!?
