Planning permission is required to demolish a habitable house.

    Hmmm...

I think that even demolition of non-habitable houses needs permission now. Check the regulations around 2007/8. Thin that the demolition exemption went completely.

Has anyone ever been fined for demolishing a old house?

Here's the 2008 amendments Class 50 is a dubious one - because it doesn't say you can demolish a whole house, it says you can demolish buildings up to 40sq.m - So what if the house is less than 40sq.m (I know it'd have to be a pretty small house at that size and of no use to anyone). So here's the questions: Is it bigger than 40sq.m or is it abutting another property? If you're still unsure, either a pre-planning consult or Section 5 might be of help.
