C130 Hercules at Baldonnell

    Saw a military C-130 Hercules transport climbing out from Baldonnell this morning, it looked like an RAF aircraft with cam colours but I could not see its markings

    It was a KC-130T of the US Marine Corps - it arrived late Thursday afternoon.

    A distant shot of KC-130T 164181 "Yanky 97" departing Baldonnel this morning. It returned to BAL later in the afternoon.

    A refueller? So what's it refueling? That would be a good comms catch.

    The comms would probaby be on UHF. But most likely it's here on the usual training circuit not to refuel anything.

    They would refuel Marine Corps or US Navy jets and helicopters. I remember seeing a USAF C130 refuel two Jolly Greens at low level once, less than a thousand feet. Impressive to say the least.

    An impressive sight indeed. Love those hulking Jolly Greens.......



    During the air campaign against Serbia in the 90's I managed top spot refuelling taking place as we were heading up the Adriatic from Greece or Turkey (can't remember which.) Very rare to see this,even from miles away.

    It just departed Baldonnel as I speak. 10.40. Quite low in comparison to the departure profile of the Learjet or Casa.

    It just passed out over my house, we are right under the approach to BAL,
    From it's low climb out It looks to be heavy, very impressive

    Will this be a variation of the long haul transport aircraft that are going to be purchased by the AER CORPS in the new year.?
    I presume it was here for evalution purposes so , should be interesting to see those monsters in and out of Baldonnel in the next while.

    You're joking right, dechand? The Marines are regular visitors to Baldonnel over the years. That's all it is a visit during a training flight.

    Somehow I cannot see the Air Corps getting C130s anytime in the future. Far more likely they will lose aircraft seeing as government has all but banned the use of the MATS service.

    Not really, the C-130 is a tactical aircraft and as such tends to do short haul flights.

    The long haul aircraft that are going to be purchased by the Air Corps in the new year are C17 Globemasters, we have six due to be delivered in January. These will give us Global reach in imposing our foreign policy.

    Sorry for the p*ss take but we're broke, no new aircraft on the horizon - in fairness if we can keep the current crop out of the maintenance hangers we're not doing too badly. For the air arm of an army of 9,500 we're pretty well endowed.

    I know I'm digging up an anwered topic but I didnt want to create a separate thread for a question and since it was already mentioned here..
    How is MATS missions reduced?
    Like, who and for what sort of journeys can use them now?

    Another C-130 landed in Baldonnel about 5 mins ago.

    Didn't manage to snap it overhead but in my opinion I think it looked similar to a USMC KC-130T that was there a week or so ago. Had eyes on it for about 30 secs.

    It was a Canadian Air Force CC-130 that was at Dublin airport on Sunday...

    This is the USS Forrestal (CV-59), during the1960's they tested out the idea of using the C-130 to resupply a carrier at sea, it's possible to land a C-130 and take off again with the ship steaming at 35 knots into a 30Kt headwind, but there were safety issues and also they could not fit the aircraft on the deck lift so it could not be taken below to the hangar deck, the USN later developed their own Carrier Onboard Delivery (COD) system based on the same Grumman airframe used for the Hawkeye mini-AWACS system
