Wedge Play

I do the odd lesson and last week we worked on wedge play. He asked me my yardages for each of my 4 wedges, that's where it got embarrassing. I kinda know them but not well enough, which translates into, not knowing them!! Idiot, and all the time I spend thinking about golf

I'm glad this was highlighted because in hindsight I've mostly played my 56 from anywhere inside 95 and this was on feel rather than a controlled execution.

Do many people play full SW shots or do you prefer a 3/4 swing with a PW? This would then follow on using gap and lob wedges.

We then measured out my yardages with my SW for full, 3/4 and 1/2. This gives you 3 shots minimum per wedge. If you do the same with your other wedges you'll have a nice little matrix to cross check against after factoring in conditions.

That's my project for the winter. Now is actually a good time as it's not too cold and your balls will be making a pitch mark even on the fairway. Someone wants a rangefinder for Xmas :D

I'd be interested to see your yardages, not for distances but to see if any 2 overlap, mention the degree of each wedge

Just to really split hairs!! when you measure your full shots make sure it's a smooth swing. If your in between yardage it nice to know you have a "step on one" yardage too

Yeah I'm calculating it on my average distance rather than my maximum

Tried to do this once but my 1/2 wedge shot was just too inconsistent. I have a decent 3/4 wedge shot (9 o'clock) but if I don't work on it I lose it. I also have a regular full wedge shot (about 10.30 o'clock) and a 'let it rip' wedge shot.
Gives me 3 different options with each wedge and I have four wedges.

I'm probably covering somewhere between 40m to 120m in this range and there is some overlap there. In truth though, I don't practice enough at this and don't really know my exact distances with each club.

When I'm gearing up for next year, this is one of the most important things I'll work on.

Is the OP a teaching pro?
