Game Of The Week: Plok!

Plok! is an unusual game. It's vast melting pot of traditional platformer twixt shoot em up twixt bizarro rpg-esque undertones really gave Super Famicom gamers something different at a time where (and even to this day) traditional platform games struggled to provide something new.

I love Plok! because it tried something different. The title character was fun to control and had a somewhat 'interesting' stock weapon (his limbs!) to get you going. The whole premise of the game itself is truly bizarre. Odd looking fellow wakes up one day to find someone's nicked his flag. Cue long journey to find said flag across strange world where a nations flag is represented by a pair of pants flown at half mast.

Plok! can be frustrating at times with it's map layout providing several frustrating jumps that need more than microscopic accuracy to complete without taking a hit. This is more than made up for though with a fun variety of weapons and machinery that Plok! can use to navigate the masses of levels. These range from waddling limbless to helicopters and UFO's and more. Sure you could say Mario 3, for example, offered variety with the various suits Mario could don, but Plok! offers some truly ingenious items to spice up what would be an otherwise tired, linear platformer.

Super Famicom titles are usually accompanied by bland (by today's standards) midi soundtracks that all sound a bit samey or flat. Not Plok!, this game features a wonderful soundtrack. Pop the game in, power up and the first thing your greeted by is an odd looking chap who loves playing the harmonica. Awesome, almost foot-tapping stuff!

What we have here then is a well thought out game sprinkled with some fresh ideas, colourful, bold, cheery graphics and a mega soundtrack that all blends together to form one of the best platform games on this or any console.

I love this game (although Darius is still super awesome). :D

Ah, I really like Plok! Good choice and one of the most over looked games on the system.

Plok was/is fantastic! Remember first seeing it on a the Mario All-Stars VHS tape presented by Craig Charles. The next couple of years was spent buying every game shown on it.

    No spaceships?

Either Pyongyang banged his head or else The Invasion of the Bodysnatchers isn't fiction :pac:

Plok is one of those games I've owned for years but never really played. I passed on it as I thought it was just a bog standard run of the mill 16 bit era platformer that I've played a million times before. Will give it a proper play through over the weekend :)

At the moment it's like one of those boil bursting videos on youtube, I just had the most disgusting morning ever but enough about that :(

Eugh. You should be ringing a bell wherever you go to warn people of the horror. :pac:

If I were you I'd start killing some rats now to gather some humanity for when it gets worse.

Warning: under arm infection story incoming

I forgot to mention it's like one of those youtube videos except there's 6 of them.

You know something is very wrong when you are pulling what can only be described as ropes of solid pus from them :P

On a happier note, the pain is much reduced and I can move my arm now!

Nope! Thought that would be too predictable.

I'd have only picked Darius or Sapphire or Side Arms (Retr0gamer's current favourite :D) or Omega Boost or Ibara or Night Raid or Darius Burst or SOufkjdsghkdjsghjjkwlwqejrentai or Refrain: Prism Memories or Ketsui or Mushihimesama Futari or Gradius or ...............

    You get the point. :D

I think to help get you better we should compile a list of games you should be playing. In fact, I'm going to start a thread on this right now. :D

Ah, rookie mistake. If you're going to break something, the trick is to break your leg. At least that way you can still play games.

And another bonus being because you can't walk, people have to bring you food. So it's like a never ending breakfast in bed.

was thinking "sure Pyong will pick something I never played" and it's lucky I've played Plok before.
Me and my friends would play lives but don't remember getting any further than the first boss though (who reminded me of Aaaah! Real Monsters or something)

I couldn't do the shooting game choice. Mainly because it would be predictable, but the truererer reason is I couldn't pick just one. Even Darius would be impossible as I love them all!

It was narrowed down to Thief, Miami Chase (the ORIGINAL Grand Theft Auto!), Pocket Gal, Smash TV, Shockway Rider, Rolling Ronny, Hudson Hawk and Plok! :)
