Is there any such thing on the market as a service kit to allow home reconditioning of a passat gearbox?
    It's a 2000, 1.6l petrol.

I have googled it, but could only find one's for automatic gearboxes.

id say cheaper would be get to gearbox garage, and recondition , as those parts i think been sold through companies, not for public, might will find some on ebay., but you have to know type and model of your gearbox, id say up to 400 - 450 would cost in gearbox repair center. overhaul kit would be around 150 -200 on ebay, but dont forget that special set of tools and press need to have, to work on gearboxes, also knowledge. ...

Thanks for the reply. Was hoping there might be a cheap way around it, guess not!
Only got the car last week so wasn't prepared for the extra outlay for recon/replacement.

Get a secondhand box. Should be plenty around for small money.

I think that's the best option George. Off to scour a few online breakers so :)

second hand gearbox is an option, could get for around 100 - 150 quid, plus labour (unless you doing yourself).... problem is , that would be knackered also.
as vw gearboxes are pretty weak. get gearbox off somebody, who gives a warranty on it at least for 3 months..

Home maintainence on a gearbox is not really a runner. If it was I'd change my first - second gear on the Passat, it's slow and awkward, but not enough to make me pay for it to be repaired. changing the gearbox oil does help, and that's doable at home - with the right tools and of course the precise type of oil required..... about 40 - 50 yo-yo's I think.
Not the cheapest if it doesn't fix your problem.

I tried the oil option hoping against hope that'd sort the problem, unfortunately not!

I'm struggling to find any breakers selling a box for one for less than €300.
I'm in 2 minds as to go that route or chance getting the parts to fix 2nd.
There's absolutely no issue with any other gear, they're all v smooth. But 2nd is very crunchy. I'd say the previous owner was driving with it like that for a while.

I know the best option all round is a recon box, but I'd find it very hard to justify €450 on one. Especially this side of xmas, wasn't something I'd budgeted for at all :(

Thankfully labour isn't an issue as my other half can do all that.

Petrol Passats are not that common in this country so getting one here is probably gonna cost you.

As others said, gearbox recon DIY is not really a runner. It may be possible but the chances of a successful outcome are low enough I would think

Thankfully I just came across a box from a UK breakers for €160 so I'm going to snap that up. Come's with 60 day warranty, just hope its ok as I'd imagine to courier it back would be pricey!
Don't have much choice though, wish me luck!
