first off your gonna be crucified on Tax
and if something goes wrong its gonna cost ya.
    what kinda mileage?

friend has a 01 model, six months in he had already spent 1600 on repairs.

nice cars to look and powerful to drive but when you consider tax, petrol and repairs its not worth it imo.

    go jap or german

Have had several saabs over the years mainly 93s no 95-yet. All I can say is that they are great to own and not too much trouble in my experience. Most who own them like them and would get another. Main thing is to buy at good money look around well and get some history. Perhaps you should also consider 1.9 diesel 95 to reduce costs.

€615 a year is hardly crucifiction though.

A Volvo S60 2.0t would fit that bill too, alot nicer and more modern than the 9-5 too. The facelifted 9-5 front looks like Dame Edna imo.

i was looking recently for a nice saloon with a good bit of power.
    a Saab 95, volvo s60 and Audi a4

the volvo and audi where streets ahead in terms of extras.

I actually like the look of the 95 the Volvo is a lovely car as well but I prefer the 95... Saabed thanks for the link I'll have a look from what I can gather the main things to look out for are
    Oil change every 8k miles
    Suspension
Timing belt done at 40k miles
Make sure all the electrics are working
    Unusual tyre wear

The oil change thing is well sorted by 07/08. After that they really give much trouble at all. You've got to remember that it is a dated product, the competition had it well beaten in every department for years now. Its just a very endearing car. I also love the look of them and the way they drive. That said though I probably the last person to be asking given my fetish for the brand :p

All cars above about 1.8 litres are going to be a bit more on tax, not just Saab.I am still mourning the loss of my 02 9-5:(.She was my first Saab,(black) and really loved her.If I had money again, I would love to get a 900.Different from the run of the mill normal boring cars.

Sure do. 2002 2 litre lpt. Bloody great yoke. It wont scare BMW drivers down a back road thats for sure but my God is it comfy. Scary too at its ability to hide speed in a straight line. Acres of room inside, very well finished with lovely materials and its an antidote to the Germans. A well minded one will also see off anything from Germany when it comes to clocking up miles, they just dont wear out. Go mad and buy a last off the line 2.3 Aero. That will see off anything from Germany in the performance stakes too euro for euro wise.

My brother is on his 3rd 9-5, and has had no problem. His current one is a peach - V6 3.0t. Petrol. :-o

Gorgeous. Has every toy going: Tiptronic, flappy paddles on the steering wheel, full climate, leather everything, heated AND cooled (!) seats - front & rear......and must be the greatest 'sleeper' there is......and bought for a song.......

Gets about 27mpg from it, which is good for what it is, imho....

All SAABs are fwd, always have been, and are better than rwd in snow.
I find the autos good in snow, and easier to drive tbh, as gear changes are torque dependant, and sshort-shift nicely, which helps traction..

You need to check individual cars for sale for specs.

Crucified on tax, any 1.6 is around 400 the saab is 630 , 230 euro a year extra , not exactly crucifixion , for the comfort and style of a Saab . Added to that the 1.6 focus or Corolla would probably cost you around 2 grand more ;)

Enjoy it, we had 3 9-5s over the last 10 years and loved them, always had petrol and always had all the toys. Only changed due to company car coming into house, a new BMW 520d earlier this year, was really sad to sell the Saab after a great decade of them, always kept them serviced and was never left by the side of the road or really let down. If it was my choice, we would be back in the 9-5, just prefer them. The BMW is fine and does everything perfectly, but you are either a Saab person or not.

Hi, yeah the 9-5 is grand in the snow, from 07 on they are all bio power, do you plan to run it on bio? If so your service intervals are half normal mileage, they are not a bad car really i work on them everyday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 748 ✭✭✭Yawlboy

Isn't E85 gone from Ireland now? Saw this on the the Maxol site http://www.maxol.ie/general-content/maxol-bioethanol-e85 and this on the AA http://blog.aaireland.ie/index.php/2011/02/07/e85/so-long-ethanol

The manual on the Biopower says service every 30k kms if run on normal petrol and every 15k kms if you run it on E85.

To be honest I think that the 150bhp with normal petrol (180bhp with E85) is fine in the car, its a cruiser not a sports car.
