    This is a weird one!
The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) has told mobile phone companies to begin blocking text messages containing "obscene" words.

Mobile phone companies Telenor Pakistan and Ufone confirmed to the BBC that the PTA has sent them a "dictionary" of banned words and expressions.

The PTA has reportedly ordered operators to begin screening text messages by 21 November.

Ufone say they are now working on how to block the offending words.

    Story continues here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-15772292

Some of the allegedly banned words

    Athlete's foot
    Flatulence
    Jesus Christ
    Monkey crotch
    Back door
    Head Lights
    Bewaquf (foolish)
    Bakwaas (nonsense)
Wuutang (a presumed reference to American rap group the Wu-Tang Clan)

They have picked some strange words to block and some strange phrases.
Can anyone explain whats offending about some of them or am I leading a sheltered life? :o

Well, that certainly a bizarre thing to do, especially if the list is anyway true, could just as likely someone making up a list for a laugh, but knowing the Pakistani government, that could very well be the actual list.

Wu Tang Clan song "Protect your neck" contains the lyrics, 'Terrorize the jam like troops in Pakistan' rapped by the Rebel INS. I'm sure the clan could make a great diss song against Pakistan now..

I'm glad obscene texting is banned, it'll make Pakistan a better place. Wasn't there recently a internet censorship bill being passed in America?

We have freedom of speech here, but to a moral limit. Though, I'm just glad that our police don't treat us like this here below:

Instead we're the ones beating our police up:

The citizen slaps the cop for questioning him for too long (1 hour+, which made the citizen lose his daily earnings) which in return made the cop lose his job. Kinda ironic.

What now? Surely you can't criticise Allah or Islam in Pakistan without facing some penalty? Or am I mistaken?

Will be interesting to see what Telenor Pakistan does if this is true, as they're a norwegian subsidiary company. Telenor will probably not be so popular in Norway if they condone censorship at this sort of level.

Athlete's Foot is Urdu for "Yankee Imperialist Bastards".

    Or something.

So here's a list of banned NFL shop jersey words from 2005:

    http://outsports.com/nfl/2005/0301nflshopnaughtywords.htm

And this is the full list from pakistan:

hmmm, for some odd reason they look very much alike. Wonder why?

So let me get this straight, I can buy a bazooka but I can't write bazongas on my jersey?
    Makes sense I suppose:confused:

They have temp' put it on hold.
Probably because they also saw they were being a bit silly with their choice of words! LOL
They have decided to try and cut the list of words down.

The blasphemy law in Pakistan is highly controversial. A lot of high profile politicians have been assassinated for voicing their opposition to it.

There are many blasphemy laws in Europe but Ireland has been unique in strengthening them in the 21st century. See blasphemy.ie

Subsidiary companies operate according to the laws of the host country. As such Telenor will censor if they are required to do so. This is normal practice.
