I am self employed as a courier and always buy my diesel at a well known garage in the Ballymany area. Tonight I pull in thinking it was €1.44/lt, put the hose into the tank, and checked the pump only to notice it's €1.47/lt. I then noticed the petrol was €1.44. IE, Diesel is now 3 cents dearer/lt than petrol.

With rumours of the VAT going up from 21 to 23%, can anyone explain what is going on? The brent crude price today is $112.31/barrel, hardly any difference than over the last few months.

Can see €1.50/lt before Christmas at this rate.:mad::mad:

Not wishing to doubt You Jarecki, but can You please explain then why the retail price of petrol is decreasing, but the diesel price is increasing?

Two reasons mainly I'd say - the demand for home heating oil goes up at this time of year and as a result diesel goes up. I don't know why but I've seen it happen before.

Also could be because people are buying diesel cars over petrol now so it could be a way for the station to profit. Maybe they looked at their books, saw they sell more diesel than petrol, so figured they'd jack up the price.

Most (not all) petrol stations know that there's a very informed market for petrol&diesel, and they actually make very little on fuel. Most of their cash is made in shops, charging 2 quid for coffee and tea that costs 20c to make, that sorta thing. They know people are watching prices, so it's actually bad for them to 'jack up the prices' because they're not drawing in enough people to the stuff they actually make money on.

You'll notice that stations in the middle of nowhere don't necessarily charge more -- you'd think that the theory would be that they can charge more because they have a captive market, but in reality they have a small window between profitability and driving people to drive further for fuel.

As for petrol vs. diesel, who knows. I've spotted them converging over the last while in all stations -- it's a macroeconomic thing rather than individuals or franchises deciding to screw folks.

Taught I was seeing things on the way home - Petrol €1.43 Diesel €1.46

I know so many people who jumped on the Diesel bandwagon with blinkers on as it was 'Cheaper'

I'm only surprised it took this long to happen

True indeed, I thought it would take even longer tbh and it will before all stations charge more for Diesel

yep, it was a bad idea and all those dealers who took perfectly good 1.0-1.8 petrol cars as trade ins will be selling them in droves in about 6 months when diesel being more expensive becomes a permanent fixture.

    What blinkers?

Any diesel car will give much better fuel economy than its petrol counterpart.

Great thinking. I mean those 500 miles I did on personal use last week (which is low) would have been so much cheaper in a petrol equivalent with that 3 cent difference. Oh no wait, you're talking rubbish. :)

    Phew
