MBP 2011 - Replace HDD

I've a 15" mbp (late 2011) and am considering replacing the hard drive in the machine.

While the physical change is easy (remove old, insert new), how do you transfer OS, applications and data? There was no OS CD with the system when I bought it, so can only assume that the mac OS (Lion) has some basic OS on the system, with the rest on the disk.

So, is there a webpage, youtube or such tutorial I should follow? I've searched but have only seen info about cloning your old disk and such.

    Thanks for the help.

--- Not sure if it matters (probably does) but I have an external HDD which I use TimeMachine to back up the system to.

You should be able to find guides on google.

I would recommend using a tool called carbon copy cloner. You can clone your current HD to a USB hard drive and then change the drive to the the new. Then you boot from the USB drive and run carbon copy cloner again to clone the USB to the new internal drive.

And option if you use Time Machine is to download a utility from Apple to make a Lion installer on USB key. Boot from that and chose to restore from a Time Machine backup to your new HDD.
