Does anyone know what the deal is with Job seekers allowance + part time work?
I looked on citizens information, but now I am even more confused.

Lets say I am getting 150euro JSA per week, and I was able to get a part time job on saturday and sundays at 70 euro per day (140euro/week).

The amount you earn will be assessed and your claim will be reduced accordingly.

In the example you give, you wouldn't lose much as the first 20 Euro each day is disregarded and only 60% of the balance is assessed off your claim. The amount you earn on a Sunday isn't assessed.

So you would lose 60% of 50 Euro from your claim. That's 30 Euro off your claim, so you're 110 Euro better off in the week. If you were working Friday/Saturday instead of Saturday/Sunday you would lose 60 Euro off your claim, but would still be 80 Euro a week better off than not working.

You lose your payment completely if you work (even for one hour) on more than 3 days a week, excluding Sundays.

    Thank you for explaining it!
3 days of work per week would equate to how many hours work?

It doesn't work that way. If you work one hour in a day, then you're employed on that day. So you can lose your entitlement to Jobseekers Allowance by working only 4 hours a week, if you're working one hour a day over 4 days!!

Or you can squeeze all your hours into 3 days (or 4 days including a Sunday) and retain some payment. However if you are working 36 hours in a week, they will consider you're full-time employed and you won't be entitled to a payment either.

Hello, does that mean someone on jobseekers can work up to 8 hours x 3 days per week? That is 24 hours...
    Thanks

Yes. I think they can work one, two or three days. However, Sundays are now counted as a work day.

Reason I asked is because I have a friend who is on disability and all she can earn is Euro 120 on top of her disability allowance. I was wondering if the same applies to Jobseekers or can you earn more than Euro 120 as in the OP's example: Euro 140.
If they can work 3 days per week, and each working day comprises of 8 hours, then that is 24 hours per week, which on the minimum wage of Euro 8.65 per hour amounts to Euro 207.6 and is above the Euro 188 jobseekers allowance, thus meaning that someone can be earning Euro 395.6 per week on jobseekers... Is this true? Or is there a limit to the amount one may earn?

There is a lot of info on this link. http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/social_welfare_payments_and_work/disability_payments_and_work.html

Thanks Maryanne, but the link you supply is for Disability, whereas I was asking in regards to jobseekers as per the OP's question. Your link is clear and it provides us with an amount (Euro 120) that people on Disability can earn before their allowance is affected, however the question remains as to how much can one earn (or how many hours can one do) before jobseekers allowance is affected.
My point is that the welfare does not specify the number of hours or amount of money (or does it?), it just states that you can work up to 3 days. I know all is means tested, but what is the actual cap? I mean, how much can someone earn on part time and still be entitled to the normal Euro 188 weekly jobseekers allowance?
    Thanks.

The rules for Disability Allowance recipients are different. The work must be of a therapeutic nature and be certified by a GP as being so. But she keeps her full DA, whereas the Jobseeker will have his/her allowance gradually reduced.

Yes, I rang the welfare today and they explained it very well. The first Euro 20 are disregarded for jobseekers, and all after that is calculated at 60%. It looks a bit complicated but when the lady explained it to me it made sense.

In regards to disability, do you know if the person will lose her medical card if she gets 120 euro in excess of her disability allowance? she sent her renewal form but its taking them ages to make a decision... months really... thanks

Hi folks does anyone know if you take up p/t work (within the rules for jobseekers allowance) will this have any effect on future eligibility for schemes such as back to enterprise?

thanks in advance - it's such a pity that the info that's out there is so hard to follow, it's almost as if they like making it difficult to understand
