Hi I'm getting four 2TB harddrives sent over by my uncle from the states as its going to be alot cheaper then getting them here...

Just wondering could I get nabbed for VAT bringing these into the country or is there any way around it ?

Fly over and bring them back hidden in your luggage, should save a few bob that way.

If they're brand new in boxes customs could think that you are selling them and make you pay customs duty - Maybe be risky but personally I think there's very little chance and only 4 hard drives.

Normally, if you want to take back a few items, you can take them out of the box and place them in your suitcase so they will know that their not for resale. This is the best option. Use DHL and wrap them together but out of their original boxes. Maybe put some random word, pdf files, etc. and pretend it's for work!

Otherwise, maybe get them sent over one or two at a time with birthday wrapping paper and a card with them if you must have them in the box.

    Guys,

lets be clear. You can dress it up all you like. Yes, you may get away with one coming through without having to pay VAT but the likelyhood is you wont.

The courier companies and An Post are obliged to make declarations to Customs. Harddrives - even dressed up as gifts.

Have a look at this thread. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=65040007

    That should answer your questions

    Cheers,
