Are technocrats such a bad idea, we get qualified people to run the country who are not overly worried about re-election, has to be better than the lot we've got

In general, Engineers are excellent problem solvers. However, there might as well be a lack of communication on how the answers to the problems are relayed to citizens and this lack of the popular touch would fail to carry with it public opinion. So there have been excellent technical types who became leaders eg The current Chinese leader Wen Jiabao,Thatcher, Grant they've been marked as aloof & cold.

    Hitler was an elected politician.

You can't extrapolate based on one (bad) example.

And he organized one of the most efficient genocides in history. Technocracy is exactly what the world needs, charisma doesn't count for **** when there is a real problem that needs to be solved.

In fairness there were only 6 teachers as Government Minsters in Cowen's Gov and only 20 % of TDs and Senators were teachers professors.
:DTrue the present Taoiseach and leader of the opposition and Finance Minsiter are teachers !
