Just wondering how big of a memory stick would you need to record a few programs and pause live tv? would 16gb do or would you really need an external HD? in the booklet it shows a 4gb memory stick though or a HD.

How many programs do you want to archive or keep ? Laziness factor of transferring to other device - PC etc.

Normally 1 gig per hour or 3/4 hour.

Make sure you get a stick with a high write speed.

HD is closer to 4Gigs per hour. EG I recorded Ice Age 3 from CH4HD which runs for 1 hour 45mins and used just over 7 Gigs

hmmm, right. External HD it is then!! :D Thanks lads. By the way, what are the programs recorded as? Could the external be plugged into a PC and played or would it need a decoder to read them again? Probably won't be doing this but just curious.:D

just another thing...what kinda HD should I get? I've noticed some of the bigger TB ones "require" an OS.(windows or Mac)
I take it these wouldn't work in the setbox?

Usually they are .ts files. Yes they are playable on a PC or Mac - have done both. You may need to download a recent/decent player such as VLC as some software such as Quicktime doesn't seem to be up to it.

Do they?? Are you sure it isn't that they come preformatted for PC or Mac?

Definitely would not buy one that says it's for Mac - it will be exactly the same hardware but in a prettier cardboard box and cost a lot more! More important question is should you format it as FAT32 or NTFS.

Also - be aware that the .ts files are not compressed like the ones you might download off the 'net, so take up about 6 or 7 times the space - not great for storing a lot of recordings. So you should probably go for whatever is cheapest out there - maybe a 320G or 500G that's being sold off as end-of-line? Or haven't you got some old ones lying about? Doesn't matter if these are no longer data-worthy for business - who cares if you lose a few seconds of a TV programme?
