As abve folks my daughter has just informed me that she wants a laptop for xmas,,so what kind of money would we be talking for a basic enough one,id imagen all she will be doing with it is a few websites like she uses on the house PC and music and maybe some games and play CDs/DVD on it,,,i dont know much about them regards what power and speeds and such would be available,,,,so in a few words im looking for something fairly cheap, reliable but will surfice for her kind of use,,,

And is it possible to get a toggle thingy so as she can pick up the signal of the landline broadband,i think you can just buy one of these, can you,,just a once of purchase,??thanks for any info,,

With all due respect does a 12 yr old need a laptop ? Can she not use in house pc for what she "needs" laptop for ?

What games does she play on the PC?
How much would you like to spend on this?

I would imagine if you have landline broadband you won't need any dongle or anything, the laptop will just connect to the wireless. I am assuming you have a wireless router that you currently use to connect to the internet.

Current generation of processors are coming in at around €400-450 for the cheapest.

How about you keep your comments to yourself? The OP is looking for advice on a laptop/netbook. You either have a recommendation or not.

it really doesnt have to be good, some cheap netbook you can find. just to get her familiarized with computing better. and make sure it has a cd drive since she uses those.

Get something basic, it'll just be used for browsing the internet, skype and a few other light processing tasks. Wouldn't spend over 450 euro on one.

Go into Harvey Norman or PC world and buy one that's on sale.

Also, it might be a good idea to install some monitoring software on the laptop too. I do slightly agree with the above post that a 12 year old doesn't need a laptop, so I would recommend you have the ability to see what she's up to, just in case.

My friend got her 7 year old one and it seemed to work jsut fine, you jsut monitor it. Great learning tool tbh. no need to spend 450...any auld 200-300 netbook will do.
