In the process of buying a 03 passat.

It needs a timing belt kit and obviosly I'll do the water pump at the same time; also, one of the cv joints.

How much do you reckon this will cost, parts and labour??

    Rough estimate..

We'd be charging €450 on a diesel B5 Passat. Keep in mind that half the front of the car has to come off to change it.

Shiza, i didnt think it would be that much. Does that include the cv joint?

Nope, I;d have to check but a CV joint is in the region of €100 fitted.

This is what has to be done to change a passat timing belt.....

100 Squid for a twenty quid boot and packing some grease? Never had it down as that expensive. :(

OP, Can you not get all this done pre sale. Ps - B5 Passat do like their cv joints.

    CV joint...not boot.;)

I always assumed if the failure wasn't that bad you just repacked the grease and replaced the boot. But I'm a cheapskate :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭shaunie007

I've gotten a pretty good price at the min even including what has to be done so I'm happy enough tbh.

Have to admit, thats a serious bit of work... and i thought all mechanics were just talking a good game..

    Cheers dudes

Passat B5 has the engine mounted length ways as opposed to transverse, which is why half the front of it has to be removed to get at the belt and water pump. This obviously makes it more labour intensive.

If the cv is knocking, its for the bin. Packing it with grease may quieten it down for a short while but nothing more.

It should be possible to get the whole lot done for €450. €350 for the belt kit and pump and €100 for CV joint supply and fit.

I hope you charge well for any other work you do if your doing b5 timing belts for 350! Did you not quote someone else 350 for a belt/water pump in an octavia..which doesn't require anything like the stripping the passat does?

There is more stripping on a B5 Passat but there is nothing awkward about the job. Once you have the front unbolted access to the belt is far easier than on a Golf. It takes us the same length of time to do a Passat as a Golf. The parts are the same for both therefore the job is the same price.

Didn't realise the engines were longitudinal in these - is it a 4 cylinder? Thought only 6cyls and up were that way these days. Our Volvo is a 5 cyl and its transverse.

That shape Passat is Audi based. Audis have traditionally had longitudinally mounted engines. Anything from an A4 upwards is longitudinal.

I find a golf/octavia among the easiest to access. If you can do a passat/a4 in the same time as a golf then I tip my hat to you....

....I wouldn't mind seeing it though;)

Well if it took longer I would charge more ;)

Autodata actually lists a longer repair time for a Golf so it isn't just me either.

You're not in the north west by any chance?? as in you george?? I'd be interested at that price if my own man cant do it for that...

Nah, I don't think we need to race. Its obvious that george knows his stuff expecially when it comes to VAGs and I'm sure he knows how to price his jobs.

Don't forget also that my biggest problem on that front is that I only have limited say in the prices we charge in my garage:(

Now, the car I went to look at turned out to be an absolute tractor inside!!!

Fag burns, tattered leather and an extremely worn steering wheel! Tell tale signs that it's been clocked.
I brought my cousin, who's a mechanic, with me and he had it sized up it seconds.

When i put everyhting to him, he didnt really have anything to say.

So, it's back to the drawing board.

    And here we are:
    http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201145428205164/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-from/2000/price-to/3000/colour/black/model/passat/make/volkswagen/postcode/ha14wt/page/1/radius/20?logcode=p

Sorry about the length of the address. I have him at £2,700, around €3200.
To get it back and everyting and vrt of €565 (i think), i should have it for 4100, which I'm prepared to go to if the car is as good as it looks.

What do ye think? Remember folks, be honest... And no hand bags gentlemen/ladies please.....;)
