Father in law had mo-mo up for NCT today.

Fail advisory on sheet because of age of tires it seems, have not seen the page yet.

Is this a new trick and what happens next year? car >10 yrs old
    Thanks

Its for safety, old tyres degrade and start to crack over time so need to be replaced.

They definitely couldn't fail the car just because of the age of tyres.
Maybe tyres are bald or cracked.

I dont think its a test fail just an advisory that you should have sorted. The UK MOT does similar. Certain things are not failure items bu they still advise getting them sorted. Or if a part is showing wear but is still within tolerance (My Xantia Activa has an advisory on a drop link from its last MOT before I got it but was still hanging in enough to pass)

Yea its the age of them, I think its anything over 5 years is a fail advisory

    P.63 Note 4 NCT Manual..

The owner should be advised of any tyre with a tread depth of less than 3mm or, where the date of manufacture is obvious on the tyre (Item 7 on the tyre illustration in Section 37), a tyre older than six years.

It doesn't appear to be a Fail item. The only mention of the term 'Fail Advisory' in the NCT manaual relates to S.61 Registration Plate Lamps.

Its not an NCT fail. Its just to inform you of safety recommendations and encourage you to have them replaced based on manufacturer recommendations.

Most people ignore it of course:rolleyes:

Tires deteriorate with age even if they have never been used or have remained in a store’s inventory shelves. The problem cannot be detected by visual inspection or by looking at the depth of the treads
Tire safety researchers have pointed out in various studies that as tires age they tend to become dry and brittle, and this can lead to the treads separating from the tires. The results of tread separation can be catastrophic when it occurs in cars traveling at high speeds

Open the bonnet!? Sure that's for that wrench monkey down the end of the road. Wouldn't know how to open it anyway!
