External Hard drive shot

Well guys, my 500gb maxtor external hard drive is fecked I think, been giving me some warning signs for a while such as weird file names and files that wouldn't open but it's totally gone now, just trying to recover some documents from it as I type.

Bought the harddrive at the very end of this month 3 years ago, and there's a 3 year limited warranty on it, bought in Argos. Should I reformat the drive and then get in contact with the store about it or contact Maxtor? Paid 90e for it back then. Thanks :)

    Sorry if wrong forum.

Yes check the manufacturers website, you should be able to put the serial number in and it'll tell you if it's in warranty or not. You should download Truecrypt and see if you can format the drive with that - it'll totally wipe all data on the drive.

Segate bought Maxtor, so check it with this link...

Cheers for the link, well it's saying it's out of warranty on that anyway but says "Contract Repair Only" under options.
I always thought a warranty is valid from date of purchase  I guess I shall drop them an email about it and see what's the story, worth a shot.

If you bought an extended warranty from Argos that's a different matter - one to be sorted with Argos. But the manufacturers warranty I would say is from the time it is placed in stock, tricky area I know, but it won't cost you anything to send an email anyway.
