After vowing to not buy any more glass, I just did.

    Picked up a new Nikon 50mm f1.4

Now my nifty fifty will probably feel betrayed and unloved when the new kid leaves the box and joins the others.

Can anyone see a reason why to both 1.8 and 1.4 ?

Is the 1.4 the new G ? And the 1.8 the AFD version ? Keep the 1.8 in case you ever want to shoot on older nikon bodies that need an aperture ring.
Also, keep it because sometimes you want to stick the cheap lens on the camera instead of the expensive one. Keep it because you won't make much from the sale. Keep it so at some point you can introduce your wife/girlfriend/friend/family member to the joys of shooting with the nifty fifty.

I can alway dream up hundreds of reasons to keep gear, which is why it's exanding into cuupboard after wardrobe top after kitchen press. I really must sell some. I may just start with my 50mm 1.8 :)

i have three 50mm f1.8 lenses, which i don't use (the 1.4 is the favourite child).
i have about four or five other lenses which have not been used in the last few years. i inherited most of them, rather than bought them.

Actually I did forget about the F4s, so the nifty fifty stays and can feel valued too.

whoohoo ! Although you can use G lenses in shutter priority on the F4 apparently, never done it myself. On a related note, ever think of buying a databack for that F4 ? Hmm ? Trap focus, interval timer, between frame data recording ? Great things, Great things altogether. Why mention it you ask ? Ohhh no reason, no reason at all ... *whistles*

I have used G glass on the F4s and it works fine in S mode. As for the data back I've seen them as an accessory for the F4s in the manual but have not found one for sale. If one were around it's something worth considering.
