YLOD - What's Next?

    PS3 60GB from Xtravison - bought around Summer 2008 if I recall.

I just received the famous YLOD. It's totally out of warranty and my only course of action at this point is to get a refurbished model for €160 or something. Which is totally stupid as I can get a new model plus new game, HDMI cable and extra controller for €249.

Is the data on the HDD still recoverable? Is there any other claims I can make to get a new replacement? If so, what are they?

I was told it's to do with the solder Sony use and it melts away easily when heated. The PS3 itself was in a well ventilated area and there was very little dust, if any, there wouldn't be enough to cause the problem.

    What can I do next?

If the PS3 does not work then there is no way to get at the HDD as it's encrypted.

For a 60GB i would suggest getting it fixed properly rather than trying the small claims court.

You need to pick between them as if you do even try to open it to get it fixed to just get the saves off it you won't have much chance getting a favourable decision in the SCC.

You suggesting go to the SCC? I have tried reading the thread and it's full of contradictions. As in people come away with new PS3's or refurbished models.

Could you outline what I would have to claim or where even I would need to start for it to be successful?

I had a computer guy take it apart already to see what was the issue. He suggested the hairdryer treatment. I will probably do that if I can't get a replacement and try and get the saves off it. Even if it doesn't work it's done anyway.
