A neighbor of mine had one of these, and found it very reliable, but it was an alcoholic on the juice.

They are reliable as anything except for the timing belts which gave a habit of only lasting around 28-32k--recommended is 36k (miles) but Ive seen them go a lot earlier than that.

Last time I recommended one to someone the sonata was described as the "beige slacks" of the car world :)

Had my eye on a 2.0 Auto that was traded in here a few months back--turned out it was an ex taxi that wouldnt have been ideal with the massive mileage that was on it.

I say go for it if yoou like your "beige slacks"

That's it VB, you've officially announced that you have no taste in cars :pac:

The newer model of them is way better looking. The headlights are terrible looking on those models you've linked to. You can see they were probably aimed for taxi's alright - if you were pasted drunk and squinty eyed you might mistake the headlights for a Merc...

A 2.4 petrol with good spec in the newer model has great potential for bangernomics - they must be practically worthless in Ireland!

Is it the petrol or diesel models are potential belt snapers?

Not about having no taste, its about how well they work. Personally i'd take one over a Rover 75 which everyone on here has horn for, now you dont get much more ''Beige slacks'' as a Rover 75.

Btw that first one for a grand needing work is going to cost closer to 2k.

Windscreen is main dealer only as far as I can remember--well they were when I was in Hyundai.
The rear buses are a bastard of a job and you can only buy a shaft and not a cv on its own--around 300-500 + vat and fitting.

Second one looks ok but no mileage on the ad??

Third has big mileage--147k?? Probably an ex Taxi in bits with that mileage.

    I have one, 03, 2l petrol.
I got it in 06 with ~20,000 miles on it.
It now has 120,000 miles and has given me very little trouble. Nothing non standard service, with exception of handbrake cable and wiper pump.
Great standard specs in car, leather, cc etc.
But as previous poster implied, it's not the most exciting car in the world...
However I was coming out of a long term, expensive and passionate relationship with a 3lt V6 alfa 166, so realistically I needed to settle down with something more dependable :o

If you're up for a little bit of work, here's a new model 2.4 for next to nothing.

I'd say it has the original engine oil and everything.

    It looks fecked

One careless owner alright but VB isn't averse to a bit of bodywork and the mileage is low so it may be mostly superficial.

I know he isn't from the Carina's but seriously, if the mileage is that low and the exterior is in that poor a condition it doesn't give a good indication of how well the mechanical are.

Also the drivers door catch is filthy which suggests to me it has been driven by someone who conducts hands on work, builder, surveyor or farmer of some sort I'd say
