Canon 600d: problem

Hi. I'm trying to take photos of printed pages with this Canon 600D and when I last tried a couple of months ago I could snap away without problem. Now, however, the camera will not allow me to take photos at a straight down angle (the book is on a table) and it is only when I hold it at an angle that it allows me to take the photo and then infuriatingly it doesn't allow me to take it at that angle a second or third time. So I have to move around and keep pressing the button until it finally allows me to take a photo. I can't see a pattern in when it allows me to take a photo and when it doesn't.

What is causing this, and more important how can I stop it and get back to taking photographs whenever I want?

    Thanks.

Can you give some more details?
    What lens is it?
How far from the page is the camera?
What is the minimum focussing distance for the lens?
What modes and settings you are using?

    Lens: 18-135mm
Distance: between 30 and 60cm from the page.
Focus: I don't know the answer to this.
Settings: I have gone through all or nearly all of the settings, although it usually worked fine on the Scene Intelligent Auto setting. I have tried it on close-up; portrait; landscape; creative auto; flash off; manual exposure.

minimum focus is 0.45m (17.72") (450mm), maybe this is the issue.

On another off topic note OP, how do you find the 18-135?
Im thinking this will be my lens upgrade from the kit 18-55 lens.
