What to buy 22K to spend

    Hi All.

Need a nice motor, insurance isn't an issue although needs to be diesel.
22,000 to spend maybe 24,000 at a push. I've been looking at brand new
as I'll be a first time buyer so want a decent car under my belt with a warranty.

Been looking at Golf's but by the time you put extras on their nearly BMW money?
Don't want a family car, Kia keep poping into my head because of 7 year warranty but not keen on them. two year old BMW 5 series also came to mind
but could be expensive and short warranty on a used model.

What do you suggest, new Focus looks nice, not sure if its as good as the golf?

First time buyer? Get a smaller car for less money, a Suzuki Swift for example, you don't want to put dings in your new golf do you?

If you really want new, a Golf Tsi 122bhp or Focus (no idea of the engines here) should be plenty.

I would get the Golf only for the DSG box, prefer the Focus in all other areas - possibly there's a focus with a dual clutch configuration - if you mostly drive in town, an automatic is best.

You'd get a 2011 seat exeo for your budget, it's basically a previous generation Audi a4 with new type engines

Kearys in cork have a nice one

If you don't need space or extra doors then the Scirocco is a nice option:

More stylish than the conservative Golf too.

Offer only applies to C-MAX, Mondeo, Kuga, S-MAX or Galaxy.

    No Focus I'm afraid.

...mmm., that's unfortunate: I wonder would they haggle ?

Either way, there are 3 Focus' (Focii ? :p ) under 22k, and the Zetec is listed at €23,025, so I would expect that would be haggle-able to your 22k budget.....

The KIA Cee'd and Pro-Cee'd have several models, from 3-door, to 5-door to estate, all well below your budget, and that 7-year warranty is very hard to ignore, as well.

Are they f***, go for the golf OP you will not regret it when you go to sell it on or trade it in. a golf is one of the best cars out there to hold their money, while the focus will lose a lot more of its value. I traded in a 10 year old golf diesel last year and got €2500 for it, rang the garage up after for the cod and he was looking for €3600 for it  Buts thats VW and Audi's they hold their money .....but most people on here seem to Bash the VAG cars:D

    Golf FTW OP

I'll agree with you if you tell me you've owned both a new gen Ford and VW.

Otherwise.....rant on.....and, no point in having a car that 'holds it's value' if, whilst you own it, you either a) get bored to tears, or, b) get to use their roadside assistance a lot and of course c) pay over the odds for it in the first place.......

They're a first time buyer and they want a new car, you suggested an (almost) 5 year old 3L 5 series. It's fair enough that you like big engines but not everyone else has the need for it. I'd take plenty of smaller engined cars over that BMW

That 530d is €1293 to tax I doubt the OP was headed that way!
Why are peope anti golf I drove a rental new one recently like I stole it and found it quite good for a hatch.
The interior was nicely finished and the engine was quiet on the motorway.
As for pricing it up to BMW prices - if you're buying new you'll never recover the price of extras by a mid level model in a normal cover and it will hold its value relatively well.

I agree they're nice to drive. And there is something to the 'sounds like a VW' door clunk, even.
But you got to give it back, and not own it. Huge difference.

Bought a nissan primera brand new back in 2005 and I think the novelty only lasted a few days. Great car though, never had a spot of bother with it but just boring and a lack of poke at low end gears due to it's weight.
Changed it a few months ago and got a 07 BMW 520D and absolutely love driving it. It came with a 2 year warranty so I've peace of mind for 2 years and it's a fantastic car, nice bit of poke compared to my last car and perfect for passing those pesky 80kph drivers ;)
Go for black or silver...looks way nice especially in black.

    First time buyer?
I personally wouldn't buy anything new - get an older second hand money, learn to drive, operate clutch and all that stuff - no point to waste your money if you are not a good driver.
Drive it for a year, sell and then get a good brand new car. - you will have it for years, so whats the point to have a car that newbie used learnt to drive before.

You can also get a focues 2011 - with very low mileage for less than 17k. Seat Leon - 18k . Golf - 19k all diesels.

Top suggestion! Shouldn't be too bad depreciation wise etc, how much more money could it lose if you got if for €20k. A V8 Maserati will always be worth something. And you get to drive around like a BOSS instead of some Ford with 90bhp that will lose a huge amount of money over the first 2 years.

It's also never too early to suggest a Maserati.:D

The op mentioned he wanted a diesel presumably for economy, dont see how this fits in to be honest.

The worst of the depreciation might be out of the way but the servicing and running costs will go a long way to making up the difference.

its news to me that VW are the best selling brand in Ireland.

Heres the SIMI stats for the past 10 years.
    http://www.simi.ie/statistics/national_vehicle_statistics.aspx

I didnt have time to go through all the years, but of the ones i looked at by random Toyota and Ford are ahead of VW in the sales (in 08 Toyota sold almost 50% more than VW) which confirms what I remember from various new items over the years.
Never once remember hearing VW as the leading brand.

I really like VWs myself but they are overpriced and are NOT the best selling car maker in Ireland.

indeed, but the statement I am pulling up is : "VW is Ireland best selling car and has been for quite a while."

It isnt the best selling, not this year and not any year. And certainly not for a series of years either.

VWs are solid cars, but it still hasnt made the brand the best seller in Ireland !!
