I have Ubuntu 10 on a Sony tz150 laptop but its starting to strain and I hear 11 is worse again.

I only use it for holidays and chrome is all i need.

Is there a striped down distro like windows had tiny xp?

hardware support would be nice but not essential as i can install device if needed.

    Thanks.

While waiting for answers www.distrowatch.com is a decent place to browse.

Sorry misread your post. Local install you want.

There's Damn Small Linux (DSL), Ubuntu Netbook Edition (UNE), Crunchbang, Vector Linux, Puppy Linux. Just to name a few very light versions for older, lower-spec machines.

If you want to stick with Ubuntu (some of the above are Ubuntu derivatives as well) then you could try Xubuntu which is Ubuntu using the XFCE desktop environment. It's less of a resource hog than Ubuntu or Kubuntu.

Of course it can. Read a bit of the wiki.

Launch a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) after booting from the USB stick and type 'install /dev/sda' to kick off the installation - it'll replace everything on your drive so backup first.

    Seems like the obvious solution.

If you want a "full OS", I like lubuntu a lot (quite a bit more than xubuntu).

Have that installed on 2 older machines.
The oldest being an old Dell inspiron. Which coupled with a new wifi pci card has given it a new lease of life. Handy for general browsing facebook and mail stuff I like to do away from home.
    Great lightweight distro.

    Went with Linux Mint.

Seems faster than the copy of ubuntu I had.

Chromium was ideal for what i needed but once it was installed it proved too simple :o

    Anyway thanks.
