Facebook Name Change

    Hi Guys,

Ok so I have a business set up as a personal profile on facebook - which is wrong know. Now I have found out that you can actually convert to a 'page' which is great.

The only problem is I really need to change the name, just slightly, as now it reads 'ConwayMedia Ireland' as opposed to just 'Conway Media' and converting would ensure that the name would be stuck. The automatic name changer wont allow me and I dont know what the best way forward is?

    Hi PrintBob,

When you say 'automatic name changer', what do you mean by that? Have you started the process of changing the account and it stops you changing your name? Is that what you mean? Or do you mean you have tried to change the name of your personal profile before changing to a business page?

Here is a video taking you through the conversion process http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDhtEIYqGuk
That has within it the part where you choose the type of page and the name of the page. Perhaps you can change it there, it seems like you can. I can't confirm if it will as I have not tried the process myself.

JniC, thanks for that post. Apologies for not being fully clear - I was basically trying to change the name as I thought that whatever name your profile was, had to be transfered over exactly. You seem to be right about being able to change the name in the process though! :)

I'm happy as up until yesterday, I thought that there was so such thing as a page conversion so at least facebook have a heart!

Yes, I thought that was a nice addition to the last major overhaul they did. That video shows how to back up your material too (in case you didn't know where that was!). It would be nice to be able to take all of that with you but at least you'll have your followers! Content can be restored and possibly it will be a good way to reintroduce older content!

As I said, I haven't yet had to convert a page but I assumed from that the name could be altered as shown in that video. Of course you could set up a test account with a different email address and test the conversion to make sure - just in case!!

Oh, do please let me know how you get on though as I was going to do a test on this feature myself!

FROM FB - Our automated system has detected that the name "Conway Media" is not the same or similar to your profile name "ConwayMedia Ireland". Please keep it the same or similar and retry.

This is what came up when I tried to convert and change the name in the process. It seems that anything to do with name changes are just a no-go at the moment. I might have to contact facebook themselves and see if I can get a response..

They are unfortunately not always the best on responses. Would it allow you to space out the Conway and Media at least? Having Ireland in it isn't the worst thing. That might be seen as 'similar' at least.

It's a shame because a lot of people adopted that when using personal pages for businesses, words like'media' which were flagged by Facebook were pushed into another part of the name so as not to be detected by Facebook.

FB are very particular on name changes.

Would you not be better off starting a new page from scratch?

Tried it JniC, still won't allow the change! Im just going to see how good they are at responding to emails.

We have a fair number of friends, nearly 1300 so starting from scratch isnt really something I want to do if its avoidable. You would be relying on your friends to 'like' the new page and id imagine uptake wouldn't exactly be swift. Id prefer to start with over 1000 likes and then build on that from there.

Dreadful is the answer !! We ended up putting a hyphen in between our names, it was the best we could do .
    Good luck .

I've been having problems myself then found this in the comments :

"From the current influx of comments, it seems as though the Facebook migration tool may be having an issue this week."

    It's not quantity it's quality!

Well it would seem that it's quantity until you get past the 1,000 mark at least.

Glad to hear it worked out for you in the end! It would be a shame to lose that fanbase and have to start from scratch.
