I'm hoping someone can help me with regards to this query.

I'm wondering what is the situation regarding the Disabled Drivers and Disabled Passengers Scheme when someone has only one hand. I've read the criteria and it doesn't seem to mention that a person with one hand qualifies however I'm hoping someone can clear it up for definite.

I know of a woman in my local that lost one hand in an incident while in the defence forces.
She applied for this scheme and was refused

    Rules

In order to qualify for tax relief under the scheme, you must have a valid Primary Medical Certificate. A Primary Medical Certificate confirms you are severely and permanently disabled and:

    Rules

Are completely or almost completely without the use of both legs or
Are completely without the use of one of your legs and almost completely without the use of the other leg to the extent that you are severely restricted as regards movement in your legs or
Are without both hands or both arms or
Are without one or both legs or
Are completely or almost completely without the use of both hands or arms and completely or almost completely without the use of one leg or
Have the medical condition of dwarfism and serious difficulties of movement of the legs
Local Health Offices of the Health Service Executive (HSE) process applications for a Primary Medical Certificate. If the HSE refuses your application for a Primary Medical Certificate, you may appeal the refusal to the Disabled Drivers Medical Board of Appeal, National Rehabilitation Hospital, Rochestown Avenue, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin.

    Thanks folks.

Yea it seems you don't qualify going by both your posts. Am I right in saying so that you don't qualify for anything if you have to adapt a car to enable you to drive with one hand? Seems a bit odd.

I've sold cars yards ago on the scheme where only modification was a wheel spinner ball.

If you don't mind me asking how did this car qualify for the scheme when it was most likely used for a person with one (or one functioning) hand?

As far as I know a person with one ( or one functioning ) hand does not qualify for the PMC so therefore the the car would not qualify for that person.
The steering mod does qualify for this scheme in other circumstances.

It was automatic, can't remember what condition he had, but he had all his limbs.

Only in Ireland would a person with one hand not qualify for this scheme even though half the grannies in the country are deemed suitable as passengers thereby allowing young family members get a new car and the old person to never so much as sit in it.

I too find it a bit odd that this is the case. You're as disabled with one hand as you are with one leg. I might look into this more and query it with the powers that be.

Best of luck, I can almost assure you it will get you nowhere. :(

The badge has to do with mobility.Having one leg impacts more on mobilty than having one hand. Hard to see a one-handed person getting the pass.
(I have MS and had to fight damn hard to get mine, they have toughened up on the rules in the last few years)

    I have no idea,
I never had to appeal as I got it when first examined by the medical examiner.
