RTE.ie Streaming in HD Tonight for Ireland V Estonia

    Hi all,

RTÉ Digital will be doing a public facing trial tonight of online streaming in High Definition for the EURO 2012 Playoff.

You'll be able to watch the stream at the link below:

    http://www.rte.ie/sport/livestreaming/hd/

This is a trial only, so your mileage may vary, as they say. To get the HD stream you are going to need a really good and consistent internet connection (we recommend at least 4Mbps sustained), though if you don't have the bandwidth the player should automatically drop you down to a quality level you can play back.

As well as that, if you visit the page on an iPhone or iPad you should be able to see the stream too, though not in true HD it will be pretty close on those devices.

We're really interested to hear people's experiences of it, good or bad, as the point of the trial is to get an idea of potential issues etc. Please feel free to e-mail onlinetechs@rte.ie or post here with some feedback. If you could let us know where you are in the country, and what ISP you're using etc., that would be great.

We hope it works out well, but being a trial there are no guarantees. If you are having trouble with it, you can always visit the pages where the standard streams are which will be linked from http://www.rte.ie/sport/

    Enjoy the match!

    Jonathan

    is this geoblocked?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9 RTE.ie

Yes this is geoblocked as we do not have the rights to show it outside Ireland.

Sure I'll try this out and give some feedback.

That's great actually. Saves me having to get up and turn on the tv!

    Yep, stream looks great

Any chance of doing a Champions League one for the night RTE has the rights?. If only showing to Ireland would RTE be able to stream a choice of the different matches online?

Feedback much appreciated guys, keep it coming.

Sorry about the lack of audio on the normal stream, gremlins descended, should be fixed now.

Excellent quality stream. The old box in the corner will be entirely redundant soon.

If you right click on the player, there is a "Show Bandwidth Test" button, which will give you some stats. If the current bitrate is 2500, you are getting the HD stream.

    Not working for me.

Ordinary option only allowing me to click on a link from the match on last Friday not tonight's game.

Then get a message saying "Next on RTE Two is The Social". :(

Fluctuating a lot, seemed to max out at 1500 for a while and the picture was crystal clear, but its now back down to:

    Streaming
    Automatic selection? Yes
    Current bitrate? 512 kbps

    playing (Can pause? Yes)

At 512 its just an average quality stream.

    Stream now established

Just to say watching it in full 2500 on UPC 25mb in Rathfarnham.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,528 ✭✭✭Shred

I'm in Dublin on a UPC 100Mb connection and the bitrate keeps switching constantly and only stays on 2500 for a few seconds at a time and even goes as a low as 512. I'm on a wired ethernet connection with nothing else running in the background. Nice stream on 2500 while it lasts though.

    Thanks for the feedback all.

For those of you who find the streaming switching up and down between the various quality streams available, can you give some feedback as to the experience?

    Jittery? Smooth?

    Thanks!

Its still a very smooth stream, I've been running it the whole time with the bandwidth visible, even when its fluctuating between 512 and 2500 the stream only ever stuttered once or twice.

The stream quality does depreciate slightly when it goes down to 512 but generally its been great.

Thanks for that. I'm afraid the 512K stream would be noticeably different to even the 1024 stream, never mind the 2500. We are not miracle workers :D

Jittery and would replay the same footage on occasion, i.e. a 1-2 second passage of play would repeat immediately after it was first shown. Promising though.

Only saw this after the game and have been watching the last 5-10 mins, superb quality stream! hope to see more in the future.

Thanks everyone for the comments, it's very useful feedback.

Some things to take away and work on improving, but also interesting to see that there are a good number of people who were able to sustain the top bitrate HD stream, it's a good sign.

If we're doing any more trials like this I will keep you posted.
