Afternoon guys..

Have an old laptop that i used run ubuntu on, decided i'd change it and set it up to use a few usb tuners i have instead so i decided to get xp and use that on it..

Anyways got a few different versions of xp off the net, with "ultra.iso" i used the iso to make a usb bootable disk!

Turn on the laptop, and reads it has to boot from usb (changed the boot menu) and i get the following message:
inf file txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing status 18
Attached is the file i traced down but haven't a clue where it goes!

Tried it with a couple different versions of xp and its the same result each time..

I was wondering if i made the hard drive an external, could i put win xp on it using my win7 laptop and then put the hard drive with the xp on it back into my old laptop.. or will this feck up my win7 laptop?

Any help will be appreciated deeply!

Rgds

Try format the USB key again and use This tutorial. I would also use Nlite prior to doing this and slipstream SATA drivers for the other machine if applicable (can be found on manufacturers website).
You won't be able to install Windows on another machine fully as it will configure itself to a different enviornment entirely, if you install as far as copying files and then completing it on the old machine you should be ok, but may run into complications with SATA drivers, I'd go the easy route and do the full install on the old machine!

I think you will need bit more specialized tools to create winXP installation from pendrive. Check this guide
http://myeeeguides.wordpress.com/2008/11/15/winsetupfromusb-install-windows-xp-from-usb-flash-drive/

or just install from CD :)

Cheers yoyo and holcus!

Downloading the winsetupfromusb now!

To make the disc from the iso, can i just burn the iso or is there more to it!

Totally lost touch with the os side of things :P

You can burn the ISO "as it is" with something like ImgBurn which is free. Windows XP uses a CD as distinct from DVD, so a blank CD-R should do fine (CD-RWs will work, but can be problematic).
The WinsetupfromUSB will take your ISO and do all the USB formatting for you, USB installs are quicker usually :)

Ok so I used the "winswtupfromusb"...

Went through all the tutorial of putting the files on the usb etc..

Put the usb in the old laptop, selected part 1 of set up.. and noticed it wasn't registering the internal hard drive..

So i quickly formatted another hard drive i have to NFTS, and put it in..

And still the same crack..

I know both hard drives are working so it's odd..

I connected up an external hard drive, it registered it, and went to install it and i got this message
Setup has determined that Drive C: is corrupted and cannot be repaired

Pissing me off now, tried it a few times and its the same story!

Going to get a few blank cd's in the city tomorrow and see how it fairs..

Cheers again!

As I said above you need to download the SATA drivers from the laptop manufacturers website and slipstream them into the Windows XP install image. XP is over 10 years old now, and SATA is only around 7 or 8 so XP needs "assistance" in detecting the new drives. This guide will explain the slipstreaming procedure.

Update:

Slipstreamed the sata drivers..

Burned the ISO to a cd..

Installed XP Successfully!

So congrats lads! Thanks so much!

However... lol

I can't seem to get it to connect to the internet..

I thought it would be pretty simple, plug in the ethernet cable... but of course it's not!

Make sure your ethernet NIC is installed properly, i think pinging 127.0.0.1 should tell you, open to correction. Or go to your device manager and loom for any yellow exclimation marks or X. Make sure your recieving and IP address from the router to.

Thats what id do first.

Looked through Device Manage but there was no warnings...

Seen something about Drivers for the Ethernet Controller possibly not installed?

Drivers are here :) . Now you need to have a clean Device Manager. Download drivers for the following:
• Audio
• Video
• Chipset
• Display
• Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver OR Intel PRO/Wireless Drivers
Storage (these are for the card reader-likely the "unknown device"):
• Texas Instruments Media Card Driver

The missing ones are probably the card reader, in device manager right click the device>properties>update driver and point it to the folder where the card reader drivers were extracted
