Shotgun Questions

Recently got a shotgun left to me, just picked it up this evening.
It was my grandfathers gun, he is dead just over 12 years and gran just passed away this year. The house and property was left to two uncles both of who don't live locally, never mind living in the same country...
When asked they had no problem with me taking the gun.
It's a Spanish ignacio ugartechea SxS, the gun itself seems in great nick, it was always taken great care of, but I would say it has not been fired in at least 20 years+
Is there anything/problems I should look out for with a gun that hasn't been used in a long time?
What about applying for a licence for the gun that is already in my possession, that has not been licensed in years and for that matter may never have been licensed...?

P.s the Shot gun is currently stored in a steel tool lock up in our shed which is on the house monitored alarm.

I haven't gone shooting in 14 years myself, and am really excited about getting back into it, I have a Vizsla pup that I have started to train, my first gun dog, its as much of a learning curve for me then him.
My goal is getting out for the 2012/13 season. I'm in no rush.

*sorry this should have been posted in the shooting section, move it if required, thanks, o.

your still in possession of an unlicensed firearm which is a criminal offence. You can drop it into the local firearms dealer for storage while you apply for your license.

I would bring the gun to RFD A.S.A.P for safe keeping until you get a licence
at the moment you are holding an unlicenced firearm and could be prosecuted

Jeez, I could be your mirror image.
I have also only got back into shooting after a break of about 15 years(young lad is now 15 and mad to start hunting).
Anyway, went off this time last year and bought a dog(guess what type)
Had my own gun but was was gifted another and then was left another as my brother doesn't shoot.
The pup has been keeping me on my toes for the last year but he is giving me great satisfaction( not to mind excercise) and i am now shooting over him.

As regards the gun,if it has been well maintained and there is no rust/pitting there will be no problem with it( one of my guns was made in 1895 and is genuinely like new)
The licence shouldn't be a problem either but you may be waiting a while for the licence. My advice would be to "go about it" immediately as the last thing you need is the Gardai to become aware that you have an unlicenced firearm.
My local FO had no problem in giving me a third licence but he did insist that the gun was handed in to a RFO while the licence was being processed.
    Good luck with it.

Firstly you'll have to hand the gun into a RFD to keep ASAP.
    download this form
    http://www.nargc.ie/Upload/Form%20FCA1.pdf
and fill it out. You'll need to hand it into a dealer because you'll need his pulse number on the form.
They'll probably want you to do a gun handling/safety course too and buy a safe which is bolted to a wall. This may not be needed or a shotgun but its up to the super.

When you hand it into the dealer he can have a look at it and might give it a clean for you and he'll know is it good to fire or not. should be fine if its kept well.
then you get a letter saying granted and you pay 80 euro which lasts 3 years and happy hunting

if its for rabbits and have no interest in shooting birds like pheasant and duck I'd go for a .22 lr. subsonic ammo means its quiet and the cheapest to run by a mile

    My steps were:
    • Decide how much you have to spend on a gun/scope and accessories. licence and safe will set you back about 200
    • look around and ring different dealers to see what they got. dealers are meant to be overflown with second hand .22s.
    • Get permission off land owners. three is the norm. (written permission including their address and contact number) or join the local gun club/ shooting range.
    • You'll have to do a competence course so you know how to handle and safely use a gun
    • Pick out a gun and put down a deposit on it and fill out the FCA1 and give the form to the local fire arms officer and sit and wait while the super makes his decision.

this is pretty much what i done for both mine hope it helps.
