Tractor trouble

My tractor was giving trouble starting lately. Battery seemed to go flat. Wouldn't turn over. However when I jumped lead it, it started no problem.
Anyway couldnt keep at that so Bought a new battery. Put it in this evening but it was like a dead battery for a few turns before it cranked up.
I thought It would be ok once it warmed up but same thing again a few mins later. I can sort of hear the starter clicking.

I presume its the starter gone or would it just be the connection from the battery to the starter.

Secondly if its the starter, is it cheaper to buy a new one these days or get it reconditioned.

    Thanks

Most likely the starter. I got one reconditioned a few weeks back for Eur 50. Could be just the solenoid on the starter either.

Much cheaper to get it reconditioned.

Sounds like loose connection somewhere to me

I would check the connection leads

check in particular the earth lead to the chassis of the tractor

corrosion can build up inside the connectors as well as outside

I also double check the simple things before getting out the spanners ( and/ or the cheque book)

It may well be the starter, but it's worth eliminating the basics first. Im sure you will have cleaned the battery connections when you were fitting the battery, and also that they are tight. Check the earth lead where it is connected to the engine. It needs to be clean and tight. Check the connections to the starter, and again clean and tight. It would also be better to check all these with a multi meter.

    Thanks for replies.
it will have to wait until Saturday morning. Its too late by the time I get home from work these evenings.
Will try all the basics before I go at the starter.
I remember changing one on a MF 135 years ago. It was a simple enough Job.
Not so sure with my present one MF362.
Anyone know is it difficult to remove?
    Cheers.

We always had ongoing trouble like that on our tractor. Starter would only be clicking etc. I went away and got a good heavy welding cable made up, with proper crimped lugs on the end. It worked a treat.
I don't even disconnect the battery now if I have to charge it, say in very cold weather. I find that even if you open the connections on the battery, they give trouble. ;)

If its more a whirring sound off the starter its prob the bendix slipping off the ring gear, so teeth on the bendix are worn and it needs to be replaced. If its a single click, more likely loose connection as already stated, in my opinion. Eliminating these, I would look at the solenoid switch.

    [Q

Well I checked all the connections and although some looked a bit dirty they were all ok. Its was more a flat battery sound on Saturday. Like there was no power coming from the battery. Anyway jump charged it off the car and after a few goes she started no problem.
Did a bit of work with it and she she was fine.
Anyway couldn't chance it being like that for the whole winter so brought it to a mechanic up the road for home to take a look at it and another slight issue unrelated.
Will get it back tomorrow so will find out then.

Having the exact same problem just a clicking sound when trying to start. Just put in a new battery and new pole on the positive. Only problem i have is where the connection is to the chassis it is very hard to get at i would have to take off panels to get at it. If it started with jump leads or a pull would that mean it is a connection problem ?

    Check your connections 1st
If its starting ok give the jumper cables then its your alternator not charging the battery. If its still clicking then its probably the starter, a lot of the new Lucas starters are a bit rubbish nowadays. We put in a high speed iska starter last year, fantastic.

If you think it's the -ve pole/connection, get a jump lead from chassis/ground to the -ve pole. This should eliminate the -ve side of the loop.
