Ok so I'm 18 years old with a provisional licence that i've held for just under a year and want to get insured on a 1.4l Renault Megane coupe. The prices most insurance companies offer me are outrageous. 4500euros and up..
Does anybody have any reccommendations or advice as to what to do because i really cant see the point in paying 5000 for insurance on a car that is worth 1000.. its not like im gonna total it 5 times in one year.. its ridicilous, not to mention that i can't really afford it. :/

do your test, it'll start getting cheaper then..

(oh and btw, the important thing about Insurance is to cover third parties legal and especially medical expenses. The value of the car is almost immaterial.

The quote is based on the damage you can do with the car not the damage to the car

Welcome to the real world. Forget the pretending, go get your full licence, then start looking for quotes.

Get a extremely low risk car like a 1litre Micra then. And also a sex change.

    Are you a student?

I went with axa because they had a great student deal and offered me a much better price because of it. I was getting quotes double the price axa could offer.

As a reference, I was a 19 year old female with a prov licence driving a 4 year old micra and I got it for 1300 fully comprehensive, I know different situation than you but this may help

They also covered any fully licenced driver over 25 to drive it fully comp too

Thanks. If I get my full licence they are offering me insurance for 1200 which is pretty good compared to what i've been getting lately.

Have you been ringing around or just using online quotes?

Online quotes are shite for young drivers, you'd probably do a lot better ringing around to every broker you can find. I really do mean every broker. Get the phonebook out!

Yes, I've been ringing around but they still give me mad prices. I'm just thinking of doing the 12 EDT lessons and trying to pass my test to get a full licence. It might be a while before I drive in my own car but I have no other option... :(

That is the best option by far being honest. You're not legally allowed to drive on your own anyway, so it'd be a big mistake imo to get a car now. It sucks, but waiting a few months to sit your test, and spending your money on lessons is a much better plan. + you'll literally save thousands!

Btw, if you've held your license for a year, ie before the 4th of April 2011 you do not have to complete the 12 EDT lessons. You can sit what ever amount of lessons you need until you feel comfortable sitting a test.

This is probably worth a read.
