1.4 was the smallest over here, 1.6 in the UK, as above there was a 1.8 and also the 2.5KV6 and 2.0 l series diesel too.

They'll do close to 40 on a run, mid 20s around town, if you drive it hard they will drink juice.

The 1.8 would be more economical in the ZS in my opinion. Think about it, a 1.4 trying to pull around that car wouldn't struggle, but the 1.8 would be better ;)

    The zs weighs nothing

102hp & ~1200kg isn't a bad power to weight ratio, in fact I'd wager it's significantly better than the base engine in any of it's competitors at the time.

Ah come on, that just isn't true! :D

As someone who used to work for a car dealership, who used to mainly sell these cars, I suggest you walk away. They're nothing but trouble and very hard to get parts for now. Like I said, just a suggestion, you're the one who'll have your heart broke! :)

WHAt parts are hard to get for them ? AND what trouble can one expect from the various derivatives?

Given that they're basically a rover 400 or rover 45, parts are widely available

    Hmmm... a viable alternative to a Focus Mk1 1.6?

I don't work for them any more, but I remember the gaffer telling me they were going to stop dealing with Rover/MG as they were more trouble than they were worth. Immobolisers give trouble and exhausts rot like f**k on them to name a couple of issues.

I would love a ZS, I'd just get the uprated head gasket kit fitted if not already done. They are unusual cars but I would skip on the 1.4 for a start.

    why skip 1.4?

    why skip 1.4?

The 1.4 is probably reasonable in a little ZR but rather sluggish I would imagine in a ZS. It's a relatively biggish size car for that small engine. The 1.8would appeal more to me. The ZS looks pretty good so wouldn't it be nice if it had abit of decent performance to go with the sporty looks?

Plenty of ZSs with T series turbo conversions in them over in the UK if you really want decent performance in one (lots of ZRs with the T series turbo in them too). The 1.8 wouldn't be hugely faster than the 1.4 really, pulls a bit easier no doubt though.

V6 in them is meant to be a hoot, but who'd pay €935 a year in tax to drive a ZS over here?

Around where I live I could see myself sticking my leg out to get a 1.4 ZS over some of the hills:p

You might be surprised, the 1.4K is not at all as bad as most other 1.4s :)

I bought one of the last ZS 1.4s brand new from a dealer back in 2005 so I should be able to share my ownership experience over the last 6 years :)

Despite the predictable depreciation (as with all new cars really), it's been a joy to own. Contary to popular belief, the K-Series can be a very reliable engine, once it's maintained the properly. The head gasket did go on me once, but the signs of it failing (slight water loss, using some oil) were there well before it failed so I could have had that fixed before it left me stranded. Once the uprated/MLS head gasket has been properly fitted and you keep an eye on fluid levels and temperature gauge (as you should with any car), it should not go again in a hurry. Otherwise, they are not unusually expensive to maintain and it's been more reliable to me than the clio I owned before it.

Some pieces of the 180 bodykit are hard to find, but as others have said, almost everything else can be found quite easily from breakers, ebay, UK etc. I had a front impact earlier this year and my mechanic had everything sourced (bumper, bonnet, wing, headlight...) within a week. Obviously parts wont be as easy to get as your more everyday cars, since there's just not as many MGRs around but I accept that as a small price to pay for owning a not so common car.

Yes, the 1.4 is a tad underpowered, considering what the exterior styling might suggest. Still, it's a rev happy engine and as Tragedy suggested above, performance compares to many 1.6s of the era. There's actually not much difference in weight between a ZS and ZR so dont believe the performance would differ greatly between them. OP, you say you're 20. It trumps the usual runabouts..corsas, clios and fiestas by far - I'd have loved to own this car when I was that age! :) Question would be the insurance I guess.

On mileage, can easily get over 35mpg with the 1.4. I do a lot of long motorway miles outside ireland and keeping a steady 130kph does push the engine a little because of lower gear ratios, hurting the economy. If I go easy on long runs (110kph), it'll get over 40mpg. The 1.8 or diesel are better suited for long distance. 1.4 for town/short distance.

I recently acquired a 2.5 KV6 and that's a whole different beast. Got to take advantage of not being subjected to irish motor tax! :pac:
