I am looking to start investing in a good sat setup.

I would be looking to use the sat for mainly sports (3pm football) and
other stuff too but mainly football. Can someone advise me on what subs are the best for prem football at the moment? What receiver should i get? I would like to get a receiver that i could mess about with, try get new channels (Hack lol) so i suppose a linux box with a cam slot is needed.

Any help would be nice. I dont wanna go buy something without asking around before hand. A Good receiver, Motorised dish and football subscription. Hope someone can help me out on what i need for a good setup.

    Thanks,.

All depends on your budget, and do you want HD, SD english or foreign commentary. So many variables to consider.
If you can live with foreign commentary, them a TM600 linux with a Diema card for a good picture (cost about £500 for box and card, thereabout)
HD will obviously be more expensive, and english commentary is rare and expensive too. You would end up, for 3pm premiership, being cheaper going for (puke) Sky and Setanta.
    Take your pick.
With linux boxes you are probably aware of the alternatives...

Will you give you a good indication of the sat's you can receive 3pm footy on. Once you establish the sats then its just a matter of researching how to obtain a sub for each one. Viasat on 4.8e seems to be the easiest option this year.

Viasat on 4.8 in no good if you live in Ireland. It is on the Nordic beam.

Going by what I've read in other posts it actually can be picked up in Ireland. You'd need a big dish though and its better the further north east you are.

South west may be no go.

You would need a big dish (1.5m+) even bigger to still keep a good picture in bad weather.

If you are going to spend Viasat type money to watch premiership football, why not buy a Meo sub on 30w. Only needs a smallish dish ( 80cm would probably do) and will cost about the same, and it's HD. Look at LJ's liveonsat and look for Sport TV Liga Inglesa HD, it's in English and most of the big games are on it.

Would a monoblock lnb allow me to pick up both astra 28.2 and hotbird 13?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,576 ✭✭✭excollier

No, monoblock lnbs only have a 6 degree spread at best

Unfortunately No, Monoblocks come in 3deg, 4.3deg and 6deg spacings(And the spacings are more suited to central Europe from what I've heard they can be tempermental here in Ireland).
To get what you are after would require a 15.2deg spacing.
Your best bet is an offset multi LNB holder(of which there are many types) a Diseqc switch and an 80cm dish.
The 80cm dish has the benefit of allowing you to easily add 19.2e aswell.

Thanks lads. I do have a 80 cm dish, if i got a multi lnb holder how do i calculate how far away the lnbs are to be from each other and at what angle would i point the dish? Is it just a matter of of pointing it down the middle, ie 28.2-13=15.2/2= 7.5-28=21.5 degrees.
    If that makes sense!!! :D

No, not that simple but banie01 is your man, he has a very nice set up and some pics. 80cm is a bit small but you should be able to get 28, 19, 13 and maybe 16 with the triax multi lnb holder.

the idea is you pick the weakest sat as your prime focus, in this case 16, point the centre lnb at that, with dish set at otimum elevation, then slide lnb's along holder and tilt as required. once you see the pics you will get the hang of it. loads of posts on here, there's one on 26east with loads of info.

also go to dishpointer com and put in multi feed etc

    gbc-

Well what is your dish pointed at at the moment?
If I was doing it I'd go for 3 LNBs ;) I'd have the central LNB aimed at 19.2e.
Then 28.2 would be higher and to the left of centre(As you look at the dish from the front) and 13 would be lower and to the left.

Edit: Crossed posts with GBC, his advice is spot on ;) Dishpointer is very handy too and if you have an enigma based receiver and an android or windows phone the app here http://www.krkadoni.com/log/index.ph...meter-android/ is a godsend for lining up your LNBs from your mobile ;)
Saves it being a 2 man job(1 being a shouter! haha) or needing to have a TV in your line of sight.

Thanks Banie and GBC. I Have sat finder on my android which should help, but what you said makes sense. My idea was to scrape sky and just have fta on 28.2 and take out a sub with canal+ on 13 for the footie:rolleyes:

Scrap Sky? So are using a sky receiver at the mo? Or have you got the card in a linux receiver?

No, i've just bought a Ferguson Ariva 120 combo so the idea would be to set up my 80cm dish on the ariva because i can also get the irish channels along with fta with this. Then use the cam slot on the Ariva for the canal+ sub. I think this will work? I still have sky at the moment but find them very expensive, wages are going down but the cost of living remains high, looking to save money:(

jay how much is the canal plus sub??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭jay5296

thats for the year a few movie channel in that aswell that i think are english

Ok i apoligise in advance if this is a stupid question, :o but can anyone explain to me why, when i do a scan for 28.2E i get the same channels i would get when scanning 19.2E. I understand that my dish is pointed at 28.2E but scanning 19.2E while having the dish pointed at 28.2E gives the same signal level and intensity as 28.2E??? Why do i pick up the same channels on each with nearly a 10 degree difference. If i do a scan with 13E i get nothing which is understandable.(15 Degree diff).

Some transponders on 19.2 and 28E have the same frequencies so the channels you find when searching 19.2 are still coming from 28

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭jay5296

Ok thanks recyclebin, I believe there are a lot of german channels on 19.2. Would i be correct in saying that if i turned the dish slighty from 28 to 19 and used the same transponder freqs i could pick up these channels?

Full list of 19E tps here. Ignore the PAL analogue channels.
